Just like every other top player in the state, the now 6-foot-10 post is anxious to get going with basketball again. The Catlin Gabel standout recently picked up his first college scholarship offer and it could just be the tip of the iceberg after a solid junior season with the Eagles and new head coach Tim Whittle.
“It went alright although I got injured toward the end so we didn’t make the playoffs,” Zeller said. “But we started playing well towards the end before I got hurt. I think our coach went about it really well with a new group of people and I think he did a pretty good job.”
On the year, Zeller ended up averaging 11.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks. A mobile big man who not only protects the paint with his shot-blocking ability, Zeller runs the floor extremely well and has a very nice touch on his face-up jumper out to three-point range – last season he knocked down 15 threes. Since the season ended he’s been working on all facets of his game, both inside and out.
“In the off-time with Corona(virus) I’ve been working on my ball-handling and fine tuning how I shoot,” Zeller said. “I’ve been trying to develop my outside game more and work on my post footwork. I definitely want to work on my pick-and-pop and just be able to knock that down consistently. And I just want to be strong in the post, creating contact.”
While schools haven’t been able to see him in person, they have watched tape of Zeller and one school – Division II Concordia-St. Paul – recently offered Zeller a scholarship. “It was really exciting and I’m hoping it’s the first of many,” Zeller said. “The coach seems like a really great guy and he talks about how he runs his team with an NBA-style offense. That’s very interesting to me.”
Zeller remains open in his college recruitment and is hopeful that once play resumes he’ll be able to pick up more interest. He’ll be playing AAU basketball with International Elite’s 17U squad which hopes to get going in a few weeks.
Zeller currently ranks as the #27 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
