Continue ReadingNew York basketball has been placed on an absolute halt, with the AAU season still not gaining any traction. However, colleges still do not stop handing out offers, and Section III basketball showcased some of the absolute best players in the state. Looking ahead to next season, expect these players to make waves in the Finger Lakes conference, and hopefully beyond.
Aidan Macauley | Junior | Lowville
If there was one person to pin Lowville’s 22-1 season on, it would be without a doubt Aidan Macauley. Macauley demonstrated that he can excel at everything on the court, and truly do it all. Macauley was able to lead the team on transition to a fastbreak score, while he could still penetrate on a standstill offense. Macaulay is able to shoot from everywhere on the field, while he can distribute the ball at an elite level. Next season, he looks like a contender for the top Section III player.
Gavin Macauley | Junior | Lowville
Coming from Lowville in a package with his brother Aidan, Gavin has too much talent to be as underlooked as he is. Often being seen as the leser Macauley, Gavin has spent the season successfully proving that he is anything but that. Macauley is still a great perimeter shooter and a ball-handler, but his true value is defense, where he actually outperforms his brother. Macauley’s quick hands and feet is able to force unnecessary turnovers on the perimeter, as well as being a formidable help-defender.
Curtis Staie | Freshman | South Jefferson
The young gun from South Jefferson, Curtis Staie has blown traditional expectations out of the park. Staie has been given a backseat role in the offense, but his play has maximized his output from that role and shows that Staie deserves more. As an off-ball guard, Staie has been a marksman from the perimeter and always made the right pass with accuracy, while he consistently turned defense into offense through a carefully crafted transition play.
Tyler Wilson | Junior | Lyme
The stellar season that Lyme had could truly be characterized as a team effort, and it could not have been accomplished without Wilson. WIlson is able to be a solid rock on defense, and his size in conjunction with his speed and athleticism allow him to guard any position 1-5. Wilson’s best quality however, happens to be his shooting, where he can score from anywhere on the semicircle, and expand the range further, opening up the floor for the rest of his team.
Nolan Baker | Junior | Sackets Harbor
Nolan Baker kept the surprises off his agenda this season, and was able to keep his consistency to his advantage. His coaches and teammates knew exactly what to expect from Baker each game, and Baker never failed. Baker is able to take the ball to the rim, while he can also confuse defenders and lay down the jump shot. Baker is able to guard the perimeter on defense too, as his pressure allows him to force turnovers and cover more area.
Jacob Fargo | Freshman | Belleville Henderson
The one thing freshman aren’t supposed to do on varsity is produce–after all, there is a junior varsity team for a reason. However, last winter, Jacob Fargo came on to Belleville Henderson and immediately carved out his role on his much older squad. Fargo’s role is actually seen a lot in college, as the young, quick, combo guard who seems smaller but yet faster. Fargo can knock down a quick jumper, but it’s his speed and agility which provide value to his game, and which let him drive to the rim around defenders for an easy score.
Kyle Moyer | Sophomore | Belleville Henderson
Kyle Moyer has proved himself to be a great defensive guard/forward for Belleville Henderson, drawing comparisons to professional defenders such as Andre Roberson. He might not provide the stellar shooting his peers provide, but he still is able to produce offensively, as well as guard any position on defense, from a quick guard to a strong forward.
