Putting together a big season, Johnson landed his first scholarship offer from Division 2 Winona State in January.
“I was shocked,” Johnson told Prep Hoops Wisconsin. “It was after one of my practices when I got the call from Coach (Todd) Eisner and he told me the news. It was a great feeling to have, knowing all the hard work I put in paid off.”
“Right now they are the school that contacts me the most,” he continued. “They check in on me every week. I really like how Winona is building their basketball program and I believe that it’s something I can fit into.”
As a junior, Johnson averaged 20.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, leading the Falcons to an 18-6 overall record. Johnson also made a whopping 76 triples, which ranked third in all of Division 2 during the 2019-20 campaign.
With the AAU travel season currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnson is still generating a ton of interest. He listed Southern Illinois, Valparaiso, Lehigh, UW-Milwaukee, VMI, North Dakota, UW-Green Bay, and North Dakota State as just the Division 1 programs who have reached out.
Among that group, Green Bay and VMI have been in close contact.
Green Bay: “When I went on a visit during the season, after the game they asked me to come up for another visit and have lunch with that staff. Once Covid-19 came I wasn’t able to do so, but I plan to visit again once we are ready.”
VMI: “They said they like the way I play the game and believe I can fit into their system well. They shoot a lot of 3-pointers as a team and that’s one of my strengths to my game.”

Minnesota-Duluth, Northern Michigan, and Michigan Tech are among the Division 2 programs that have expressed interest in Johnson. Like most prospects, Johnson is shooting to play at the Division 1 level, but that won’t make/break where he chooses to play in college.
“Obviously, my dream is to play Division 1 basketball, but that won’t affect my decision on where I want to play at all,” he said. “I want to go to a school that wants me the most and a coach who can push me to be my best.
“And if I find that at the D2 level, then I’ll go to that school.”
Johnson runs with the Wisconsin Playmakers during the travel season.
