Sometimes freshmen are able to step in right away and make a big impact. Older players take on a bigger role. Here’s a few players I’ve seen this year from the CIF Southern Section Mission League who look poised to continue their upward trajectory.
1. Brandon Perez – Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 2022
Perez has steadily improved his stock these past two years. He’s especially made a name for himself as one of the area’s top three-point shooters. He had several games this season where he hit upwards of 7-9 threes in a game. He can spot up in the half court or he can pull-up from three on a break. Creates his own shot well on the wing. Can get all the way to rim off the dribble.
2. Dahnte Russell – Harvard-Westlake 2022
As a sophomore, Russell did a solid job spelling Spencer Hubbard when the latter needed a quick breather. With Russell on the floor, the Wolverines didn’t miss much of a beat. He’s a small guard, but his play makes up for his size. He’s a good point guard who runs the offense with poise of an older player. Very quick on the floor. Pretty solid three-point shooter.
3. Mason Dorsey – Crespi 2022
I first saw Dorsey a year ago at a kickoff AAU event and what stood out the most was his playmaking ability. He’s in the mold of a big guard who has a size advantage over most players at his position. His size gives him a great view of the court and he has strong playmaking instincts. Runs the break well and is a good passer in transition. Decent shooter from the outside.
4. Ben Shtolzberg – Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 2022
Shtolzberg is another one of the Mission League’s top shooters. He can knock down shots from both the midrange and from behind the arc. He’s got a nice scoring touch. He can attack the rim and finish the play, or he can draw contact and get himself to the free-throw line. He can also run the offense and he’s a good passer on the break. A solid outlet passer to get the break started.
