Continue ReadingCulminating in Lakeland, the Scots of Boca-St. Andrew’s capped off a historic season by winning its first-ever state championship with a win over Andrew Jackson in the Class 3A state final. A huge factor in the teams success was the play of 2021 guard Devin Hines Devin Hines 6'4" | CG St. Andrew's | 2021 State FL .
According to MaxPreps, the 6’3″ junior averaged 9.5 points and 3.7 rebounds for the Scots. Against Miami-Dade county heavyweight Mater Academy Charter, Hines dropped a season-high 23 points on 10-of-19 from the field. A student-athlete first, Hines sports an impressive 3.8 GPA at the elite private school.
While the Scots 26-win campaign reached apex levels this season, the talent of Hines has been brewing long before joining the school in Boca Raton. Previously, Hines attended Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach.
“I love the game of basketball and started watching games on television with my dad at the age of five,” said Hines. “Since my dad noticed that I was really interested in basketball, we joined the recreational centers at Royal Palm Beach. As I got older I was able to get into travel basketball with Ball4Lyfe during my middle school years. Once I got to high school, I had a chance to play with Team SWOOP and the Florida Vipers. Recently, I played with LandFall Elite and we instantly became a family.”
Coinciding with his extensive basketball pedigree, Hines has the skills of an elite player to back up his resume. In fact, you can catch him this summer playing for Team CP25 (south), formally named LandFall Elite, in case you need further convincing. For now, let the rising South Florida star explain his game for himself.
“A strength of mine is my ability to create for myself and my teammates, especially when I attack the basket,” said Hines. “I have also been a great defensive player throughout my basketball career. I am someone who will guard the best player on an opposing team each and every game. My coaches have entrusted me with that responsibility and I take that with great pride.”
Along with making his own mark, the Scots blend of team talent and chemistry is something that has helped Devin grow his game individually. Along with Hines, St. Andrew’s imposed 2020 6-foot-9 Yale commit Yussif Basa-Ama Yussif Basa-Ama 6'9" | PF St. Andrews | 2020 State #264 Nation FL and 2021 6-foot-8 D-1 prospect Josh Minott Josh Minott 6'9" | PF St. Andrew's | 2021 State #30 Nation FL onto the floor this season.
“Playing with Yussif and Josh made me a better player in different ways,” said Hines. “Yussif mentored me during the season and we both fed off each other’s drive to win every game we played. Josh and I started our chemistry playing on the same travel team (LandFall Elite) last year and that continued this past season during high school. Josh is a great teammate that always made sure I was involved in the game. Together, we will have a great senior season now that we have built that bond together.”
While the Scots ran past local power Westminster Academy, Chaminade- Madonna and former Florida No. 1 Sante Fe Catholic in the state tournament, the opportunity for future basketball accolades with Minott is just beginning. For now, Hines can continue the momentum that has made himself and the Scots a budding basketball power.
“The feeling of winning a state championship was amazing knowing that all our hard work during the season paid off,” said Hines. “We started the season kind-of unknown and put a name to St. Andrew’s basketball. Now, a lot of other teams know it as well. We were the first to bring a state championship here and accomplishing something that was never done before is electrifying.”
With all the ingredients of a present day winner, Hines knows never to stop grinding. Now that the Scots have tasted victory, the target on their backs will seemingly loom much larger. For that reason, the rising senior knows not to become complacent over the accomplishments of this past season.
“I am just going to continue to work on my overall game,” said Hines. “I believe any player who loves basketball would always want to work on improving. I just love basketball so much and want to get better anyway I can.”
On the professional level, Hines links former NBA MVP Derrick Rose as a player he looks up too. While Rose has been hampered with injuries throughout his career, Hines admires Rose for his passion and intensity within the game. That drive is something he looks to mirror within his own play over the course of time.
As the Scots have rose, so has Hines. Currently, he has an offer from Rice University while receiving interest from Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson and Texas Christian University. However, it looks like the school and the player have just started to scratch the surface. If you aren’t familiar already, it might be time to take notice.
The best might be yet to come for both.
