The junior class is tough to rate, especially when it comes to the 252 area. Here’s a look at the top juniors that stood out from the 2019-20 high school season.

MVP: Guard/Wing [player_tooltip player_id="574409" first="Terquavion" last="Smith"] - Farmville Central

Smith is the MVP of the junior class after leading Farmville Central to yet another state title game with his athletic plays and floor game. He’s a wiry wing prospect that is lethal getting to the paint and finishing through traffic. His plays down the stretch were the momentum swing down the stretch the Jaguars needed to defeat the Vikings in the 2A East Regionals. He’ll be fun to watch for another season and be a name to keep an eye on when he arrives at NC State.

1st Team

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="575163" first="Javonte" last="Waverly"] - Henderson Collegiate

Waverly has quietly climbed up the radar as one of the top guard prospects in the area. He earned All-Conference honors and won Conference Player of the Year after producing 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He’s a player that looks to make the right play at all times and defends with tons of energy. He holds an offer from UNC-Greensboro and has drawn interest from the likes of Lehigh.

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="932146" first="Daylan" last="Askew"] - Hertford County

Askew is another prospect that’s starting to grow in the state at Hertford County. He put up 19.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.7 apg and 3.0 spg as the Bears went 23-6 on the season and 8-2 in conference action. He earned first-team All-District honors and All-Conference as they made it to the third round of the state playoffs. He’ll be one to watch at the guard spot when the summer session opens back up.

Forward [player_tooltip player_id="533510" first="Dontrez" last="Styles"] - Kinston

Styles is a prospect with five-star potential and is the No. 1 prospect in the state’s 2021 class for a reason. He’s a prospect that gets it done on both ends at 6-foot-7 with his ability to operate anywhere on the floor. He put up 19.7 ppg, 11.0 rpg, and 1.1 apg as well as 30 consecutive double-doubles for the Vikings in 2019-20. He recently earned an offer from UNC, adding to a list of Xavier, Clemson, Maryland, NC State among others. He’ll certainly be gunning for the top spot in the area with his senior season approaching.

Forward [player_tooltip player_id="932135" first="Keeshawn" last="Silver"] - Rocky Mount

Silver is a bruiser in the post that doesn’t back down at all on the hardwood. Granted, he’s headed to UNC for football, but the 6-foot-5, 236-pound forward uses all of his size on both ends to make an impact on the floor. He put up 10.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 2.2 bpg for the Gryphons as they made it to the third round of the 3A State Playoffs before falling to Westover. He’ll be a prospect to watch with another season of basketball left under his belt.

Forward [player_tooltip player_id="838031" first="Leontae" last="Moye"] - Farmville Central

Moye is a player that really knows how to set a tone around the rim. He swatted away seven shots in the 2A East Regionals for Farmville Central and made scoring in the paint virtually impossible for the Vikings as the Jaguars ran away with things in overtime. He’s a 6-foot-7 forward that plays patiently on both ends and knows how to finish when the ball touches his hands in the paint. He’ll be a breakout prospect in 2020-21 for Farmville Central.

2nd Team

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="932141" first="JeZavian" last="Moody"] - Southeast Halifax

Moody is listed at just 5-foot-11 but he makes up for it with his ability to maneuver around the defense for tough buckets. He was one of the top scorers in the state with 28.8 ppg to go along with 3.2 rpg, 2.3 spg and 1.8 apg. He’s a player that competes on both ends and looks to push the tempo by creating havoc on the defensive end. As his shooting from the perimeter improves, he’s one from the area to keep an eye on.

Guard [player_tooltip player_id="932063" first="Nasiar" last="Blackston"] - Wilson Prep

Blackston was an impressive force for the Tigers in 2019-20 with his ability to set the tone on defense. He uses his length well to play passing lanes and force the defense into easy turnovers for dunks on the other ends. He’s a 6-foot-4 prospect with the ability to defend the post and the perimeter and doesn’t back down when things get tight.

Wing/Guard [player_tooltip player_id="574470" first="Omarion" last="Blount"] - Washington

Blount picked up where he left off from his sophomore season, showing off his ability to rebound and score the ball in 2019-20. He produced 17.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.7 apg and 1.0 spg for the Pam Pack alongside [player_tooltip player_id="833163" first="Rashod" last="Smith"] in the backcourt. With the keys to the offense in 2020-21, he’ll be another breakout performer to keep an eye on.

Forward Kevin Hamilton - J.H. Rose

Hamilton was indispensable on the glass for the Rampants this season, averaging 10.1 rebounds (4.8 offensive rpg) per contest and it was hard to not recognize his impact for a team who’s two leading scorers are sophomores. He also averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. He’s a 6-foot-4 prospect to watch in the paint after putting together productive numbers in 2019-20.

Forward [player_tooltip player_id="932062" first="Devyn" last="Bullock"] - Wilson Prep

Bullock is the last of a dying breed of true big man that relish banging down low, running the floor for easy rim runs and dunks and protecting the rim with big blocks. That’s not to say he can’t extend the floor with his ability to shoot it outside. He’s a 6-foot-5 forward with a nice wingspan that he uses to defend in the post and attack the rim with his underrated athleticism. He’ll be a breakout prospect to keep an eye out for this summer.
