Last night, the Summit Storm traveled to Salem to take on the McKay Royal Scots in the final conference game for the two teams. McKay has had a tough season, having not won a conference game all season long, but looked to support their seniors for a final go around. Meanwhile, on the other side of things, Summit looked to honor senior Jacob Tompkins in a way that would humble the unsigned senior.
Jacob got along to a hot start, as he scored 14 points in the first three minutes alone. He did this in a bombardment of three point shots, as Summit fed him early and often. McKay’s Kobe Miller was the crowd favorite, winning the hearts of the Royal Scots as he found nifty ways to score in traffic. By halftime, Tompkins had the school record in mind and was on track for exactly that with 21 points. By the third quarter, he was at 31, looking to break the all time school mark of 37. McKay looked to try to stop him, or at least slow him down as they threw fresh defenders on him all night.
Feeling excited but with the nerves of a road game on his back, Jacob missed two three pointers and some free throws as he got closer to the 37 point mark. But as Jacob has done all season, he got his composure back, hitting two free throws, with a total of 36 points. A hard earned lay-up got Jacob to 38 points, setting the all time individual game mark for Summit. He was pulled from the game, as underclassmen were put into the game to finish things off. Kobe Miller and McKay continued to play tough, as the seniors were pulled late game as well. The audience gave a standing ovation to McKay as they played tough all season long despite their surmounting circumstances. Overall, the Storm came out victorious 86-51. Here are the top performers from last night’s action.
Jacob Tompkins (Summit HS)- came out on a mission, as teammates fed him the ball from the tip-off. Sank some early three-pointers, which got the attention of McKay defenders. When he wasn’t scoring, he was rebounding, moving the ball, and playing excellent defense. In his final conference game, he had the incredible stat line of 38 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.
Julian Mora (Summit HS) – played Robin to Jacob’s Batman, as he found him for scores all night long as he found his teammates for easy scores as all of the pressure was on Tompkins. Handled the ball for the Storm and orchestrated things from the get go. Didn’t take a lot of shots, but was efficient and effective in this manner. Contributed 9 points and 9 assists for Summit.
Michael Schutz (Summit HS) – the blue-collar interior post for Summit held it down in the paint for the Storm as he made it difficult for anyone to score down there. Rebounded at an excellent pace defensively and offensively, as he had 5 points and 7 rebounds for the Storm.
Kobe Miller (McKay HS) – was the bright spot for the Royal Scots, as he was clearly the fan favorite. Had nice maneuvering in the post and could score efficiently down there. Had a nice mid-range jump shot as well, grabbed some key rebounds, and found his teammates for easy scores as well. Had 21 points in an all out effort for the Scots.
Elijah Hectocta (McKay HS) – the senior had a nice display of solid basketball for the Royal Scots as he found his way into the paint, either dumping it off or scoring himself. Found ways to rebound in traffic and played tough the entire game. Contributed 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Ivan Gutierrez (McKay HS) – the junior came in and made some tough defensive plays, helping McKay on that end of the court and was able to find his groove on the offensive side of things as well. Had 8 points for the Scots.
