The rangy 6-foot-4, 175-pound wing from McNary High School has exploded onto the scene his junior season and until recently, was leading the 6A ranks in scoring. Meithof still is among the leaders in scoring and rebounding and as college coaches are starting to get wind of his exploits, he’s hoping to help lead the Celtics to the highest heights the rest of this season.
A talented scorer, Meithof can score at all three levels. “Usually my jump shot is working good, but when that doesn’t work I’ve been resorting to laying it up and my mid-range game,” Meithof said. “Rebounding and pushing it in transition also gets me points, and my teammates. Them setting good screens has been really helping me out on offense.”
We recently saw Meithof have a rock-solid effort in a 19-point, 14-rebound home win over Sprague. In that game, 17 of his 19 points were in the second half as he battled some foul trouble in the early going. Despite that, McNary still maintained a lead at the half – thanks to Meithof’s abilities outside of scoring.
“That game, my jumpshot wasn’t on so I started taking it to the rim,” Meithof said. “I was kicking it out to my teammates because I knew they were going to make it. I was trusting in them.”
Despite Meithof’s exploits on the court, he notes that he hasn’t heard directly from any college coaches yet. But word is starting to leak out. According to McNary head coach Ryan Kirch, schools such as Portland, Portland State, and Santa Clara have reached out to inquire and more will surely get on board when they get a chance to see the talented junior in action.
A long run in the post-season will certainly help the cause. While McNary dropped a matchup against South Salem on Saturday to drop into second place, the Celtics may have what it takes to keep things going on a positive note. “We’re just going to have to keep playing together as a team,” Meithof said. “Keep sharing the ball each game and trust in each other.”
