Continue ReadingAlgona Bishop Garrigan is one of the best 1A teams in the state this year, and a big reason for that has been the play of junior forward Angelo Winkel.
The 6-foot-9 Winkel is averaging 19.0 points and 9.3 rebounds points per game this season and has established himself as one of the more intriguing prospects in the state’s 2021 class.
“It’s been great,” Winkel said of his junior season. “Had two slip up games but other than that we’ve been playing great ball this year. I’ve been shooting it well from the outside better as the season has gone on and that is a result of me being in the gym basically as much as I can. And I think I’m setting my teammates up well because I get double or triple-teamed every game.”
Winkel has improved in a couple of areas of his game.
“Shooting for sure,” he said. “My 3-point percentage might not reflect how much better I’ve gotten at shooting because the beginning of the season hurt it, but that’s an area I have improved. Defensively, just knowing what to do in the pick and roll and communication. My left hand [has gotten better] so I can go either way in the post and just being stronger as a player so I’ll be able to bang down low at the next level and score at all three levels.”
With the postseason coming up in high school and college basketball, Winkel’s recruitment has been fairly slow.
He hears from South Dakota State the most, and he also is in contact with UMKC, Omaha-Nebraska, and Utah State. Winkel also visited Iowa State earlier this month.
Winkel’s main focus right now is on the state tournament. Last year, Garrigan fell to Montezuma in the 1A state quarterfinals. Winkel is hoping that this team will get over the hump, and bring a state title back to Algona.
“Just being able to go out there with my guys and compete,” Winkel said of what he’s looking forward to in the next couple of weeks. “Been playing with these guys since I was a kid and to have a chance at winning a state title for this school and town means a lot to me. But also getting out there and playing my best ball and hopefully, some colleges will take notice.”
Garrigan will kick the state tournament off on Thursday, Feb. 20 against the winner of Storm Lake St. Mary’s and West Bend-Mallard, who face off tonight.
As for after the season, Winkel is still up in the air about whom he’ll play with for AAU. He’s between the Iowa Barnstormers and All-Iowa Attack.
