WILMINGTON, CA—The NO. 1 junior in the West Peyton Watson of Long Beach Poly didn’t waste any time exhibiting the skills and bounce to warrant that claim. He showcased his talent in a number of ways including knocking in a number of deep 3s as well dishing out some nifty assists. While Watson was the top individual performer, there were a few fine performances from some under-the-radar prospects in 2022 Daniel Jackson (Santa Monica) and 2020 Marland Harris (Westchester) that caught our eye.
Thomas Oosterbroek (Brentwood)
2021, PF, 6-foot-6, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mr. Glue, as I like to refer Oosterbroek to, was on his game again at this event. He impacted the game with his good feet, excellent hands, and savvy. He has a nose for the ball, is a dependable outlet for the press break due to his passing, and he can finish through contact despite not being a great leaper. Basketball player right here.
Vaughn Flowers (Rolling Hills Prep)
2020, SG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Flowers is an explosive progress with an evolving skill setJoel’s Take: One of the better athletes in So-Cal is Flowers. He is tough to deal with in transition as he elevates with ease over defenders. He shows excellent body control and his motor never stops. The one area that has shown considerable improvement is his jump shot. Great lift and a smooth release were two noticeable differences in his shot. Defensively, he has the length, active hands, and lateral quickness to be a lock down defender.
Kyle Braun (El Camino Real)
2020, SG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Braun has a solid looking frame with good shoulder width and his a sneaky-good athlete. His forte is a terrific looking jump shot off the catch. He gets great lift on his shot and he’s always on balance. To take his game to another level he needs to get better at creating his shot off the dribble and finishing through contact.
Kenny Manzi (Rolling Hills Prep)
2023, WF, 6-foot-5, 170 pounds
Joel’s take: The wiry Manzi exhibited the length and overall talent to be mentioned as one of the better looking freshman in So-Cal. He is an active wing who has a knack of getting to the basket in transition. He can toss in the runner or hit the mid-range shot. His ball skills are solid in the open court, but overall the range on his shot and triple threat game needs to improve.
