Four Takeaways
Nicholas “Nickel” Mosley (St. Xavier)
The senior point guard was incredible in this game. He dropped a game-high (and I’d assume career high) 39 points. 21 of those points came from behind the arc as he drilled 7 three pointers. He shot an excellent 13-16 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line. He had a lot of confidence going into this game. He came out of the gates scoring the team’s first 9 points. Nickel is the true leader for the Tigers and his leadership will be very important going forward.
Ethan Hodge (Trinity)
Although Ethan is committed to Xavier to play baseball, he has a great feel for the game of basketball as well. He finished the game with 11 points, 9 of those points came in the 2nd half as he tried to pull his team within reach of the St. Xavier lead. His ability to drive inside the paint and either finish or draw contact is what makes him a great player. I believe Trinity should have gone to him more in the 1st half because he cut the lead by drawing fouls and going to the free throw line where he made 7-11.
Saint Xavier’s Experience
A big chunk of Saint Xavier’s productivity comes from their upperclassmen. Of course you know about the stellar performance from the senior Nickel Mosley. They also have some other seniors that contribute as well. Juniors Ben Varga and Ayden Mudd also did some impressive things during this game as well. Varga finished with 14 points and Mudd finished with 8 points, including a fast break slam dunk in the 3rd Quarter.
Trinity’s Youth
Trinity’s roster has a total of one senior. A lot of their leadership comes from Juniors and Sophomores. Trinity has always been known to have that one star-power player but this year they are going to have to work as a team if they want to make it to Rupp Arena for state. Trinity and St. Xavier are both in one of the hardest regions (7th region) and both teams will have to step it up if they want to get passed the favorites: Male and Ballard.
