This Friday night matchup included some talented players on both teams. Most of Henry Clay’s scoring came from their upperclassmen, while most of Eastern’s scoring came from their underclassmen. Henry Clay never really seemed to get it going in this game as they only scored 16 points in the 1st Half. At halftime Eastern led Henry Clay, 25-16. The 3rd Quarter was Henry Clay’s best quarter of the game as they scored 19 but Eastern still managed to score 17. Eastern pulls away in the 4th Quarter and ends up winning, 58-46.
Three Standout Performances
Christian Spalding (Eastern)
Eastern’s sophomore point guard was excellent in this game. He has great feel for the game. His dribbling skills and driving ability is what really caught my eye. He also can shoot the deep ball as he went 2-2 from behind the arc. Spalding wins my Player of the Game as he finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. This Eastern team is loaded with young talent and Spalding is the perfect floor general to lead this team in the right direction. Young but really talented from top to bottom.
James Jewell (Eastern)
Another sophomore for Eastern with a solid performance against Henry Clay Friday night. Jewell is long, athletic, and has a basketball IQ far from what his age is. Jewell finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Jewell is the type of player that can easily take over a game. He can finish at the rim in just about every way you can think of. His jumping ability is absurd as he can rise up for a slam dunk or swat the ball off the backboard for a block. I was very impressed with the #1 Sophomore in Kentucky. These two sophomores, James Jewell and Christian Spalding, will be a duo you will hear a lot this year and for the next 2 years.
Marques Warrick (Henry Clay)
The NKU commit was very impressive in this game. You could tell from the jump he was going to be the leader for this team. His ability to drive the ball and dribbling inside the lane was key to his game. He took the most shots on his team (as he should) with 15 field goal attempts. He finished the game with a team-high 18 points. He also collected 5 rebounds. He had a game-high 5 turnovers which definitely needs to change in order for this team to become successful because the ball is in his hands majority of the time. NKU is getting a good one. The senior guard is a true competitor as he tried everything in his power to pull his team to victory.
