The Hornets extended themselves in the win column, earning a 71-38 win behind the play of their top three guards. Newberry had a couple who stood out, as well. Check out the top standouts from the game.
Torey Buie – Hawthorne 2020: I’ve seen Buie play up-close since he was a freshman, so it’s been great to see the progression of his game come full-circle. Buie scored 18 of his 24 points in the first half, and did it by attacking the paint and getting his buckets at the rim. He has a nice floater in his arsenal, and can kick it to the open man for assists if his driving lane is cut off. He’s going to be a key man for the Hornets for the rest of the season.
Steven Nelson – Newberry 2021: Nelson came alive late in the game, scoring eight of his team-leading 11 points during the second half. Despite being down, you never saw him take a play off and quit on his squad. Not only did he do well in the paint getting his buckets down low, the junior guard on-ball defended at a high rate & ended up getting a steal-and-score right before the game ended. Always hustling.
Dre Lawrence – Hawthorne 2021: This is a guy who loves to take the corner-three, and hit it. The junior guard notched 13 points in the win, including three triples. He does a great job at finding seams to weave through and get open for uncontested jump-shots. Lawrence’s unselfishness allows how to be a solid assister for the team. In-transition, he’s a guy you want running the floor with you, because he makes the right decision.
Key’Shawn Williams – Hawthorne 2020: The senior guard, who also serves as quarterback for the Hornets during football season, played an all-around game vs. the Panthers. He finished with 10 points, including a trey from half-court right as the first half expired. But, I’d rather focus on how he chased down ball-handlers, in-transition, to poke away the rock and force steals. Or, how he stayed aggressive with his drive which resulted in the defense collapsing, making it easier to dump off the rock for an easy dime.
