BELLFLOWER, CA—The St. John Bosco Winter Classic was a terrific stop during the holiday tournament fest that is currently covering all corners of the Southern California regioin. By the time the tournament concluded, St. Anthony proved yet again that they’re one of the better teams in the state as they took down the tournament host as well as captured their second championship before the Christmas break. Not too mention, fast-rising senior Jadon Jones bagged his second MVP trophy as well as an offer from Long Beach State.
Lamaj Lewis (St. John Bosco)
2021, WF, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Head Coach Matt Dunn has the luxury of having a couple primary ball handlers in Camper and now Lewis. Lewis is a 6-foot-4 multi-skilled guard who used to be just a slasher type, but now is expanding his game into new areas. His ball skills have improved against pressure and he has the length and skill to finish in the paint. His left hand needs to get better—both attacking and finishing—but he was a catalyst in getting the Braves to the championship game.
Peyton Watson (Long Beach Poly)
2021, WF, 6-foot-6, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Watson has been one of the most prolific scorers in So-Cal due to his vast skill set. However, against up-and-coming St. Anthony, he was limited to the facilitating department. St. Anthony—as expected—threw several bodies at Watson to take the ball out of his hands and to his credit he rarely forced the issue. But in the second half, his role changed as he attacked the pressure and got to the basket at will due to his nifty ball handling as well as some finishes that would be labeled under the dexterity label.
Jadon Jones (Long Beach St. Anthony)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 170 pounds
Jones is a wiry wing-type who can drain deep jump shots from deep.Joel’s Take: Jones, along with Centennial senior Paris Dawson, is putting together quite the senior campaign. The slick lefty with very good length has improved his jumpshot exponentially in the past year. Erratic was the first word that would come to mind while describing Jones last season, but oh have things changed in nine months. His jump shot has been falling consistently since the season began and his playmaking (great burst) has improved as well. He still needs to improve his off hand (right), but his progress has been excellent.
Remington Rofer (Loyola)
2021, WF/PF, 6-foot-7, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The first description that comes to mind when describing Rofer is “basketball player.” The lengthy wing-type affects the game in multiple ways. He can step out and knock in the 3-point shot, shows solid ball skills in the open court, and his passing is impressive in the half court set. His head is always up navigating the defense and he cuts well in the half court set. A solid sleeper in the Class of 2021.
Jalen Rutledge (La Mirada)
2021, PF/WF, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Rutledge is an undersized 4-man who possesses a solid all-around skill set. He is a lefty who can shoot with range out to 20-feet or attack off the dribble. While attacking he has the mass to hold off defenders and he can convert through contact. He isn’t overly bouncy or quick, but he plays with a consistent motor.
