City of Palms Classic (Day 2 Standouts) – Part 2
Here is a look at part one of the Friday standouts list.
Sharife Cooper (McEachern)
22 points came in for 2020 6’1″ Auburn commit Sharife Cooper in the second half alone. His team trailed much of the game, but he helped them claw back with his usual antics including a triple late in the fourth quarter that gave his side juice. Cooper finished 8-of-13 from the field including 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He played much of the final quarter with four fouls which made his assertiveness and effort that much more impressive.
Jyare Davis & Hassan Perkins (Delaware Sanford)
The opening half was a breeze for 2020 Delaware Sanford duo Jyare Davis and Hassan Perkins. Perkins had 11 points in the first quarter alone including a 3 at the buzzer. He finished with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. The 5’10” is crafty with the ball in his hands is simply a pure scorer. Davis was a man inside at 6’7″ and took advantage on the attack with a game-best 29 points. Corey Perkins, a 2020 6’2″ guard and cousin of Hassan had some big free throws late and added 21 points to help the cause.
Javian McCollum (Fort Myers)
One of the talks of the week from coaches and fellow media members, 2021 6’1″ guard Javian McCollum continued to show his vocal leadership, smoothness, shiftiness and shooting ability. He finished with a game-high 23 points in a win over Blanche Ely and plays with so much confidence. McCollum has the ball on a string and is a seasoned prospect. He needs to add muscle to his frame and once he does even more college coaches will be in on him. FAU and William & Mary were in attendance watching him. Division II Missouri Baptist is his lone offer as of now.
Selton Miguel (West Oaks)
The energy and pure confidence that 2020 6’5″ Kansas State commit Selton Miguel had 26 points for West Oaks in a 10-point loss to Hamilton Heights. The lead man is the clear cut leader for the Flame. He is a good shooter, an aggressive player and a dynamic athlete. I love the way Miguel likes to fight and scrap and he’s vocal so you always know he is on the floor. 2020 guards Jadrian Tracey (12 points) and AJ Staton (10 points) paced Miguel for this offense.
David Mazon & Justin Jackson (Sarasota Riverview)
Sarasota Riverview had two very steady outings from 2021 6’5″ forward David Mazon and 2023 6’2″ guard Jason Jackson. Mazon was active all game long, looking to put his head and grind it out. He recorded 22 points and shot 10-of-13 from the field. As for Jackson, he was superb after the half, scoring 16 of his 21 points in the second half alone. The strong freshman drew the start after coming off the bench the day prior and logged over 33 minutes on the floor, tops on his squad.
Dominiq Penn & Samson Ruzhentsev (Hamilton Heights)
2021 6′ guard Dominiq Penn certainly plays with a ton of intensity and purpose. He had a team-best 20 points for Hamilton Heights as he continued to move the ball in transition and score at the point of attack. 2020 6’7″ Florida commit Samson Ruzhentsev saved his best for last with a dunk off a steal to seal the victory and finish with 15 points. The third player in double figures for Hamilton Heights was 2022 6’4″ guard Reggie Bass who is a player to watch with his ability to take on contact as a defender and draw fouls while also mixing it up as a mid-range shooter. He had 14 points in the outing. His upside is apparent.
Tai’Reon Joseph & Reece Beekman (Scotlandville)
Totaling 35 together, 2020 Scotlandville guard duo Tai’Reon Joseph and Reece Beekman were steady for the Hornets. Beekman, a Virginia commit fought through a hard fall in the first half to finish with 19 points. As for Joseph, he was taking risks and didn’t shoot too well but scored 16 points to help Beekman along the way. Scotlandville is a good ball movement squad.
Note: Coaches from North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Northwestern, East Carolina, Kansas State, Florida Atlantic, St. Joseph’s and Stetson were on hand for the Friday action.
