An ankle injury set back the talented 6-foot-4, 175-pound guard and a rushed comeback didn’t really help matters either. But Chlumak has stayed positive throughout, having earned a college offer since as he looks forward to his senior season at Lake Oswego.
In the summer, Chlumak ran once again with Jordan Team Fly. “Personally I enjoyed the team and relationship-wise and team-wise it was good, I thought we were the best team in Oregon not on the circuit,” Chlumak said. “Health-wise it was tough so I didn’t think I could perform anywhere near the level where I was hoping to. But I enjoyed the guys, coach, everything – it was a good experience and I don’t regret anything.”
In the past, Chlumak has focused on improving his outside shot. That has continued but the all-around athlete has been honing in on more. “Just about everything, staying strong with my left hand, my ball-handling and my shooting,” Chlumak said. “I’ve been getting more athletic with Shep in the weight room. There hasn’t been anything I’ve been focusing on, just working on everything.”
Something Chlumak has also been working on is his college recruitment. He notes that he’s been hearing mostly from schools in the Northwest Conference, Cascade Conference, and the NWAC. One school has already taken things to the next level.
“I went up to Pacific Lutheran the other day and they offered me,” Chlumak said. “It was a good experience. I love Coach Murray and they’re good guys. I had fun at the open gym and my dad came up with me so it was a good experience. It was my first visit and I’m sure there are more to come.”
In fact, Chlumak noted that he’s visiting George Fox in the near future. “They’re right by my house so I’ve been to the campus a good amount,” Chlumak said. “So it’s going to be a fun experience getting more in-depth with the program.”
Chlumak noted that Clark College in Vancouver is the third school that he’s heard from the most at this point in time. He’s keeping things wide open for now and as he’s settled into being a Laker having transferred over from Newberg, he is hopeful that this upcoming season at LO will be generate plenty of success in many areas.
“I thought AAU set me back – I didn’t think I got much better (in terms of recruitment) just based off I was playing injured the whole time,” Chlumak said. “So I’m just excited to play fall ball with these guys and get into a routine, go into this season and show out and hopefully have a lot of success. It would be a disappointment if we didn’t win league and get to Chiles. We have high expectations.”
Chlumak currently ranks as the #23 player in the latest PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
