College Commitment: Jamison Guerra (2020 Sherwood HS)
There could have been other possibilities down the road, but Jamison Guerra no longer felt a need to wait. The heady 5-foot-10, 160-pound point guard from Sherwood had already seen everything he needed to see when it came to a college program, so on Monday morning he made the call and decided that he would stay in-state for college down in Klamath Falls at OIT.
“I just feel like OIT was the place that was best for me and will be a great fit for me the next four years,” Guerra said. “It’s definitely a place both education and athletic-wise that will be a great fit.”
Guerra had recently made an official visit to OIT a few weeks ago and took in the sights and sounds of campus – which was all to his liking. “They have a great community that loves men’s basketball and they have a great atmosphere with all their home games – the community is 100 percent behind the program,” Guerra said. “The campus is beautiful and the guys on the team were really welcoming and the coaching staff is awesome.”
One of the factors that went into Guerra’s decision was the potential of immediate playing time. “Next year I should be able to step into a contributing role and help out,” Guerra said. “This year they’re ranked #2 in the nation so hopefully they can get back into the title game again this year and then my freshman year, next year, we can do some good things. I just definitely want to get conditioned to be able to play at that level and play quality minutes, defensively be able to hang with guys, and get in the weight room and developing my outside shot.”
Guerra – who’s been busy helping out the Sherwood football team in their post-season chase – is happy about having his future determined. With that all done, the state’s top pure senior point guard who led 6A in assists last season is looking forward to fully enjoying his senior year on the hardwood.
“I think we’re looking great and I’m really excited,” Guerra said. “It’s nice to be able to focus on high school basketball and play stress-free as that’s when I play my best. I’m excited that we’ll be in the Capitol City Classic and we’ll be in The Eight and those will be great tournaments for us to play in.”
Guerra noted that the plan is to sign his letter-of-intent with OIT alongside his Sherwood classmates on the first day of the early signing period on November 13th. He currently ranks as the #12 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
