This weekend that vicinity is Anaheim, CA and the Prep Hoops California Expo. For most of these players, this will be my first opportunity to verify what I’ve seen on film. In this article PH takes a look at some of those players in the C/O 2020.
Clyde Harris 6’0 PG Oceanside – Harris is a human Swiss Army knife. I love players that impact the game in other ways besides scoring. That’s not to say Harris can’t score, he averaged nearly 17 a game last season for Oceanside. Interested in seeing how he gets his buckets. If he does happen to struggle scoring, I would like to see if he still impacts the game.
Jake Hlywiak 6’3 SG Valencia (#68PHSC 2020) – I’ve never heard a coach say they have to much shooting. If your team needs a knock down shooter, then Hlywiak deserves a look. In addition to his sweet stroke, he also moves well without the ball and shows the ability to create plays for his teammates. I’m interested in seeing how he defends both backcourt spots.
Amir Kirkwood 6’1 PG Mayfair (#82PHSC 2020) – If you played with Josh “Walking Bucket” Christopher during the high school season, then that’s good enough for me. Throw in quick hands, and the ability to knock down 3’s and Kirkwood is definitely someone worth keeping an eye on. Interested to see his overall talent. Currently he’s ranked 82nd in So.Cal, but only averaged 4ppg a game last year. He shot over %50 from the field and nearly %38 from 3 so it may simply be because of a lack of attempts.
Miles Lewis 6’0 PG Sacramento (#19PHNC 2020) – Lewis will make the trip down south to compete this weekend. The 6’0 pure pg can do it all. He may not wow you with one singular skill, however he’s good at a bunch of them. Solid defender. Lewis creates offense from D. He’s able to create shots for both he and his teammates. Can’t wait to see him live so I can get a sense of his strength and speed.
Riles Neff 6’2 SG St Bonaventure – Honestly, I just want a chance to meet Mr Neff. His game is crazy enough. Flashy handle, strong driver, quick trigger. If that wasn’t sufficient, he has a 4.3 GPA and scored 1300 on his SAT’s. Interested in learning what schools are showing interest in him right now.
Kaveon Perry 5’11 PG Durango (LV) – So happy to have a Nevada player make it out. I saw quite a bit of Kaveon this summer. Hard nosed defense first guard. Perry loves to get into ballhandlers. His offensive game consist of strong drives and paint touches. Interested in seeing how he competes being one of the only out of state players at the Expo.
Marcus Reedy 6’6 SF Ribet (#73PHSC 2020) – Reedy is a bouncy athlete. A prototypical wing, Reedy is a problem playing downhill. Good defender, he showed the ability to turn defense into offense. Interested in seeing what type of athlete he is up close.
Makai Richards 6’10 C Oak Park – So much I want to learn about Richards. He plays with one of the nations highest prep scores in Clark Slajert. While he may not impact the game much scoring wise. He has proven to be a good rebounder and rim protector. Interested to see how fluid he runs, and what level those rebounding and rim protection skills actually are.
Garrett Schaefer 6’6 SG Temecula Valley (#52PHSC 2020) – Anaheim Expo checklist. 1st make sure Garrett Schaefer is in attendance. 2nd watch Garrett Schaefer play. 3rd Wait for Schaefer to make a jaw dropping play. Schaefer is an exciting combo guard, good athlete and an excellent playmaker. In an camp setting like this, I just want to see what type of competitor he his.
Bryson Stephens 6’0 Rancho Christian (#57PHSC 2020) – Bryson Stephens is coming to our Expo! The 6 foot pogo stick, is a walking highlight. He has the strength and athleticism to clamp down on d. His athleticism also translates into several above the rim finishes. Interested to see if he can be consistent with his jump shot.
