IRVINE, Ca.— Devin Ugland, one of the up-and-coming scouts on the West Coast, put together an outstanding camp for prospects of various levels—and even a female baller by the name of Te-Hina Paopao. The camp consisted of a variety of skill development stations orchestrated by some of the finest trainors/coaches in So-Cal. The best prospect was the much-improved junior-to-be Peyton Watson while an incoming 9th grader by the name of Kylan Boswell more than held his own.
LaQwon Cole (Gardena/Serra)
2023, PG, 6-foot, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Cole projects well going forward due to his youthful frame and budding game. The long-armed combo-guard more than held his own at this camp as he knocked in jump shots from the mid-range to the 3-point stripe. He does a nice job coming to a jump stop before rising up for the shot. He is clever around the rim and it will be fun to watch him mature in the coming years.
Kylan Boswell (Ontario/Colony)
2023, PG, 6-foot, 165 pounds
Boswell is a transfer from Illinois and it didn’t take him to long to show off his talent.Joel’s Take: His overall skill set and game are well-beyond his years. He toyed with defenders with his tight handle and he changes speeds like a savvy veteran. He can hit pull-ups off the dribble or off the catch from the 3-point stripe. His demeanor is terrific as he never gets to up or down.
Davian Brown (Pasadena)
2020, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Each and every season Pasadena appears to always have a player that can get you buckets—and Brown is the latest prospect to fit that description. He slithers by defenders showing an excellent burst and he can finish in the paint or pull-up and convert the deep jump shot.
Kyree Dunn (Sacramento/Burbank)
2020, PG, 6-foot, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: Dunn was yet another impressive late-blooming point guard. The fearless attacker has an very good burst off the dribble, changes speeds, and can get to anywhere on the court due to his tight handle and quickness. Toss in his ability to make shots or set up teammates with the pass, and he has the skill set to play somewhere at the next level.
Leighton Bess (San Lorenzo)
2020, SG, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: “Motor” is the first term that comes to mind when it comes to Bess. During the drills he was one of the few players in camp that was intense both as an attacker off the dribble as well as a defender. He used his strength to keep opponents from the rim and his “will” was at the forefront with his ability to finish plays through contact.
