The 6-foot-6 forward picked up his first scholarship offer — from hometown Florida Atlantic — during the first live period. This past weekend, Minott helped Landfall Elite go 5-0 at the Cinco de Mayo AAU District Championships in Deerfield Beach.
Minott scored 12 points in Landfall’s 68-63 victory over a tough Florida Rams squad in the 16s championship game. Landfall had to overcome a 13-0 deficit at the start.
Asked how the spring has been going, Minott said, “It’s been good. Went out to Indianapolis and Georgia … just getting experience. I know the live period a lot of coaches came to St. Andrew’s. That was also good.”
Florida Atlantic, Miami, Oklahoma, Princeton, West Virginia and Yale were just some of the schools to come through St. Andrew’s. FAU coaches are high on Minott’s versatility and became the first program to pull the trigger.
“They seem to like how I can facilitate, even though I am so tall … ball-handle and stuff like that,” Minott said.
Minott — and Landfall Elite as a whole — showed excellent passing skills Sunday. The team constantly got the ball in deep for layups on the way to going 5-0. Other key players on Landfall Elite included: Micah Octave (Olympic Heights), Devin Hines (Cardinal Newman), Bobby Stewart (Boca Raton), Kenny Turner (Coral Glades) and Landon Brody (St. Andrew’s).
Octave, a 6-3 guard, is drawing interest from the FAU staff. He scored 20 points vs. the Rams in the title game.
Minott said he has been growing two to three inches every year. He plans to get in the weight room this summer to bulk up in preparation for his junior year.
Asked what will be the biggest factors in picking a college, Minott said: “A good basketball program. But then also if I’m wanting to settle down some good academics as well. Something well-rounded and suited for me.”
St. Andrew’s went 25-5 in 2018-19.
