GARDEN GROVE, CA—The Hustle in the Sun, orchestrated by the PrepHoops staff, was one of the better spring events in terms of quality of talent. Each and every time slot there was always at least a couple of games that would be coined “must see.” When the dust settled on Sunday evening there would be a number of prospects that would take their respective games to new levels—including Jabari Walker (son of former NBA player Samaki Walker) as well as up-and-coming 2021 point guard Frankie Collins.
Jake Hlywiak (Los Angeles Elite)
2020, WF, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hlywiak, who plays at Valencia High School and was a standout at The Classic at Damien in the winter, continued his feathery shooting touch at this event. He has great size for the wing, gets excellent lift on his shot, and his touch is impeccable. In terms of mechanics you will not find a smoother shooter in the West than Hlywiak.
Dominic Woods (Los Angeles Elite)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: The owner of one of the better looking jump shots in So-Cal is Woods. He broke out last winter at the Pacific Shores Tournament in Redondo Beach and he has continued his shooting prowess here at this event. Due to his shooting ability it was important for him to improve his off the dribble game, and he showed signs of this skill at this event.
Will McClendon (Dream Vision Next)
2021, SG/WF, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
McClendon is a multi-positional perimeter talent.Joel’s Take: His release is a bit too low for my liking, but he is fearless when it comes to launching deep 3s. He has the physical frame to take the contact and finish and when the driving lane closes, he can stop on a dime and convert his jumper.
Atin Wright (Dream Vision 17s)
2020, PG, 5-foot-11, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: The most athletic shooter of the bunce is definitely Wright. He has a quick release and he gets great lift on his shot. As he improves his playmaking skills and passing acumen, his stock will continue to rise.
