The cerebral 6-foot, 165-pound point guard from Beaverton carefully went over all his options, made some campus visits, and recently decided where he will continue his basketball career at the NCAA Division III level.
“I’m going to Macalester College,” Rosenthal said. “They reached out to me and I went on a visit there a couple of months ago to see the school, coaches, team, and everything and it seemed like a great spot to be at. They have a really young coaching staff and their new coach, Coach Abe (Woldeslassie), this is his first year doing it so I’m in his first recruiting class.”
“He just brings a lot of passion to the game and a lot of experience – he’s coached in the Ivy League for awhile and he just got a head coaching spot and he’s just stoked about it,” he continued. “It makes me really excited for the season definitely.”
Rosenthal had been looking at a number of high-academic Division III programs, most notably Colorado College and the University of Rochester, but as far as basketball goes the opportunity to step right in and contribute certainly made a difference for the senior.
“From what I’ve been told I can step in and get a lot of playing time my first year which was definitely a factor in me deciding on Macalester,” Rosenthal said. “I just need to get my body right. The college level regardless of what level you’re at it’s going to be a challenge to go from high school to there, so I just want to be as prepared as I can be.”
And of course, the school itself and how it would prepare him for life after college was key for Rosenthal who boasts a 4.0+ GPA. “I got to meet with some professors and they all seemed like good people,” Rosenthal said. “The academics are really strong and there are a lot of career opportunities out of Macalester. It’s just really a great spot to be at.”
Rosenthal finished this past season with Beaverton out with a torn labrum, so he unfortunately missed the Beavers in the post-season (he does note that surgery went well and with physical therapy he’s on pace to be ready to play college basketball next season). He reflected on the year.
“We definitely had some ups and downs this season especially with injuries and all that but I like the group of guys we had,” Rosenthal said. “Outside of the court we really bonded well. The record may not show it but I really think at the end of the season we came together and as a group we were playing our best basketball.”
Rosenthal currently ranks as the #76 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
