Here are 5 Takeaways from an event that featured more than 225 student-athletes.
Nunez to play basketball
Jonathan Nunez is a two-sport standout at Doral Academy, playing football and basketball.
I thought the 5-foot-11 athlete might go the football route, but Nunez said Friday: “I think I’m going to go the basketball route. I have Southern Wesleyan University — a D-2 in South Carolina. They offered me, so that’s looking like my best bet right now. My other options are to walk-on to FIU or FAU. So I have to figure out what I’ve got next.”
Nunez helped Doral Academy to a Class 7A state championship as a junior. This past year, Nunez and Co. took a 29-0 record into a regional final vs. Fort Lauderdale Dillard but came up on the short end. Nunez is an excellent leader that brings toughness and can shoot.
JWU mines South Florida
Johnson & Wales University (Rhode Island) — a Division III program — has two coaches in South Florida this weekend. Wildcats assistants have mined Broward in the past. JWU’s roster included 6-4 senior forward Randall Ferdinand, of Pembroke Pines, and 6-4 freshman guard Bryan Davis, out of Miramar High.
Colleges line sidelines
Among the college coaches scouting the talent at Cypress Bay were: Evan Sizemore and Jonathan Odjo, Palm Beach Atlantic; Landon Kurz, Webster University (Mo.); Harrison Singer, St. Thomas University; Terrance Favors, Becker College (Mass.); Rob Hoyt, Columbia College (Calif.); Rolando De La Barrera, Western Oklahoma State; Nate Hager, Regis College (Mass.); Brandon Cosby, Miami Dade College; Will Wareham, Rowan College (N.J.); and Todd Peretz, Mitchell College (Conn.).
Evaluating options
Boyd Anderson senior guard Floyd Rideau Jr. said he had three colleges show interest in him Friday.
Coming into the event, the 6-4 guard said Eastern Florida had offered and “then an offer from Stetson but I haven’t really been communicating with them.”
Asked what is most important to him in picking a school, Rideau said, “Someplace where I’m going to be able to just perfect my game and get to the next level. And somewhere that’s going to feel like a family just like Boyd Anderson is.”
More standouts
Some of the other prospects who stood out Friday: Stranahan point guard Brian Dugazon; Dillard point guard DeShawn Bartley; McArthur big guard Rahmel Davis; American Heritage-Plantation forward Masai Olowokere; and Palm Beach Central forward Alphonse Alfred.
The Senior Showcase continues Saturday with games running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
