Continue ReadingChurchill continues to remain undefeated in Midwestern League play and the Lancers haven’t lost in 2019. Silas Bennion has been a big part of the success. The fearless 5-foot-11, 165-pound point guard has done both his share of scoring and playmaking in Churchill’s top-notch backcourt and his faith in his own game has grown each and every night out.
“As a junior you’re bigger and stronger and you can do more things out there,” Bennion said. “And confidence – that’s what I’m trying to do, get more confident and just play good every game. I try to work on floaters because with those (big) guys in there you can’t get all the way to the rim. And shooting is a big part of my game, so I’m making sure that I’m more consistent.”
We last saw Bennion play at the Les Schwab Invitational in December and he was very impressive in the event. There’s no doubt that Bennion can shoot, but his willingness to take the ball inside and score over bigger opponents was also very impressive. While he’s just a junior, Bennion has already drawn the interest of some college programs. He’s gotten correspondence from the University of Dallas but has also been talking to Division II Colorado Mesa. It’s early for Bennion but he does have an idea what he wants in a college program.
“I want to play – I don’t want to go (somewhere) and not play,” Bennion said. “I want it to be a good atmosphere where there are guys that want to win and play hard.”
With plenty of time for options to come about and ponder over, Bennion is focused on the rest of this season. Churchill certainly would like to keep their winning streak alive and the confident junior point guard is keeping his goals simple. “State championship, baby,” Bennion said. “But there are some good teams out there with Wilsonville and Silverton and our league is tough too.”
Bennion currently ranks as the #38 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
