At times it can be a little tricky to garner attention down in Southern Oregon. But the way Jaray Thomas has been performing this season, he’s worth a look. North Medford just finished off the regular season capturing a share of the Southwest Conference title, and the athletic 6-foot senior guard has played a big part in that success.
“I got pretty big or in shape before the season so finishing and getting to where I want on the court has been a lot easier,” Thomas said. “Also I worked on my shot more so I can hit anywhere on the court pretty much. I’ve mostly played the wing right now but I’m really more of a point gaurd. I think I could work on staying aggressive the whole game with not fouling.”
In particular, the combo guard has played big in the second half of the year. Blessed with quickness and athleticism, he can get to the basket and create but can also knock down the outside shot. Overall, he’s averaged 13.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.2 steals so far. While you would think those types of numbers would generate some college recruiting interest, Thomas said that it’s been relatively quiet on that front. He’s open to all level of play, including starting out at the JC level.
“I’m definitely looking forward to playing basketball in college,” Thomas said. “Pretty much anywhere they’re gonna help me pay for college.”
A long post-season run may help initiate some buzz. North Medford starts out on Tuesday night at Sunset and while the Black Tornado will not be favored to win, Thomas believes that anything is possible.
“I feel like were pretty solid when we play together, which we haven’t really so far,” Thomas said. “But when we do we should go far into or even win it maybe.”
