Brandon Roberts is one of those guys and his motor on the floor has been infectious for Lake Oswego High School this season. The tough 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior has been giving it all on the court this season and his contributions have been one of the many reasons the Lakers are currently sitting at number one in the rankings right now.
“I feel like I’ve been doing really well,” Roberts said. “I’ve been doing well with my role on the team and trying to expand on that as well. I’m a hustler for the team and I make sure that I get all the plays that I can to get on the ball, get on the floor, push it in transition as much as I can do and be a team player, but also look for my own opportunities as well.”
Roberts is the quintessential “hustle guy” – the guy who will dive on the floor for loose balls, battle among the trees for rebounds, and get down and dirty on defense. But Roberts can also handle the ball a little, hit the open three, and be a leader on the court both vocally and by example.
Roberts also has brought to the team a championship mentality having played on LO’s title winning football team this fall. But while he enjoyed his time on the gridiron, his college future will be in hoops. He’s talked a bit with Pacific Lutheran but right now he has his sights on another possible opportunity at the Division I level.
“I don’t know quite for sure yet but my number one choice is the University of Denver right now – I’d be looking to be a walk-on there,” Roberts said. “I love the weather there and my brother goes there right now. So we’ve looked into it and I’ve gone there a couple of times with him and it’s been a lot of fun.”
Roberts indicates that his final decision will likely depend on the financial costs of his options. But any kind of college decision will wait until the rest of the season plays out – one in which he hopes hoops ends up the same way football did, with a 6A state title.
“We know we have to come out with energy to compete because everyone is going for us,” Roberts said. “We have a target on our back so we need to compete every day that we come out. The season is going well and we’re really bonding as a team. We’ve been playing with a lot of passing and ball movement and it’s been great so far.”
Roberts currently ranks as the #89 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
