The 6’2″ junior point guard has helped Berkeley Prep come out to a 14-5 record and a 4-1 showing in Class 5A-District 9 play.
Ajjarapu says it is quite the task being the starting point guard for the varsity team.
“Having played travel ball since grade 2 has taught me to keep my cool throughout regardless of what is thrown at me and I think this year has engraved that in me furthermore,” he told Prep Hoops.
A year ago, he didn’t see the court much with an upperclassman in front of him in the lineup.
So, despite the fact that this is not my first year on varsity, it sure seems like it; still growing in roots, still learning to climb the rope,” Ajjarapu said. “However, I have definitely grown in my abilities to handle the ball in pressure and exhibit my strengths of composure.”
Ajjarapu says he’s interested in pursuing Business Communications or Aerospace Engineering in college.
He has an offer from MIT and has drawn interest from Cornell, Dartmouth, Yale, Portland, UTSA, Liberty, Marshall, VCU, MIT, Rhodes, Oregon State, Central Michigan, Chicago and Texas San Antonio.
As for travel ball, Ajjarapu has played the last few years with Team Coop Select with coach Michael Cooper, the head coach of Anclote High.
“I play starting PG there as well. Coach Coop and the team is completely trusting in each other. There is a solid sense of chemistry both on and off the court, thereby bringing the best in me,” he said. “I look forward to late spring and summer ball. I’m also excited to put work in the weight room this summer.”
Ajjarapu lives by the saying “nothing happens until it actually does.”
“With that, I continue to put in work both Athletically and Academically in eager anticipation of what the future holds,” he said.
Ajjarapu will get a chance to showcase his abilities against West Virginia Huntington Prep on Feb. 1 and Ft. Lauderdale University School on Feb. 2 at the ARS/Rescue Rooter Hoopefest at Berkeley Prep in Tampa Bay. Look for him to make the most of the opportunity and learn from it.
