Here are 5 more takeaways from the action at Chaminade-Madonna:
Camara held out
Chaminade-Madonna coach Andre Torres held out University of Georgia 6-7 2019 signee Toumani Camara (pictured) in the Deerfield Beach loss.
Torres said Camara had a groin issue and he was being careful. He wanted to save him for district games this week against Somerset Pines on Tuesday and Calvary Christian on Friday.
The Lions are 11-3. Camara didn’t play in the second half of a loss at unbeaten Forest Hill or in the loss to Deerfield. In the Forest Hill contest, Camara needed stitches after taking an elbow to the nose and eye. Chaminade’s only other loss was to 18-1 Daytona Beach Mainland.
And University of Miami running back commit Thaddius Franklin — a sophomore at Chaminade — is back playing basketball. He had 13 points in the loss. Franklin had suffered a broken collarbone during the football season.
Albany State in the mix
Albany State has offered Stranahan 5-9 senior guard Brian Dugazon and 6-6 junior Inady Legiste, per coach Terrence Williams.
Williams said ASA has also offered Dugazon and he is getting interest from FIU and Iowa State. He was held to 10 points vs. South Miami. Legiste, who had 12 points vs. the Cobras, also has interest from North Florida.
Stranahan is 14-4. The Dragons’ four losses are to South Miami, Miami Christian, Kissimmee Osceola and Western.
Reneau on Monsanto
6-6 senior sharpshooter Damari Monsanto led Western (10-6) with 25 points in the loss to Mater Academy. The Division I prospect had 17 points in the first half — including four 3-pointers — but was held to 8 over the second half and overtime.
Mater freshman Malik Reneau, who drew the defensive assignment on Monsanto, was impressed.
“He was very strong and he has a good jump shot when I was guarding him,” Reneau said. “He made a lot of contested jump shots.”
Powell has young squad
12-2 Miami Norland was a great test for a young Suncoast squad, according to coach Jason Powell. Suncoast has just two seniors.
Sophomores Evan Stinson (6-3) and William Wells (6-1) played well along with junior Samuel Rolle (5-10). Stinson led the way with 16 points.
“It’s coming along,” said Powell, whose Chargers are 9-6. “It’s a work in progress. We’re just trying to get the older guys to mold the younger ones to actually to get them to understand the system and how hard they have to play.”
Odds and ends
The latest schools on Somerset Pines 6-5 2020 Nathan Montaque are Mercer and South Florida. Montaque had 17 vs. Coral Springs. Springs was led by senior Aamir Justice (20 points). …
Senior guard Rodney Bruce led Miami Central with 23 points in the three-overtime loss to McArthur. 6-8 senior Anthony Baker had 19. McArthur was led by junior Dominic Shaw, who had 17.
