When it was all said and done, the athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pound guard had helped Silverton to a third place finish and his play earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
“It’s nice to be able to play in a big tournament like this – I’d never done this in high school,” Downey said. “It’s been good (with this team) – I had only been able to play three games because of my knee but I’ve liked playing better competition and how everyone on our team can play. I feel like I’m attacking the basket, shooting the ball, playing pretty good.”
The start to the tournament was definitely slow for Downey as he went scoreless in Silverton’s opening win over Liberty. But he posted 15 points in the next game in the loss to Pacifica Christian and then tallied 16 points and six assists in the third place game against Sherwood and was one of only two players from Oregon teams to earn All-Tournament honors.
An athletic guard who can really get to the basket and finish at the rim but also shoot outside to keep defenses honest, he hope is that Downey’s performance in The Eight might start sparking some more college interest. Right now he’s heard from Pacific as well as a JC in Florida and the two-year college level to start is definitely something he’s considering.
“Junior college is definitely a big option,” Downey said. “I’m just staying open and seeing what happens.”
Playing well in games that lead to wins will get Downey there and his expectations are high when it comes to the Silver Foxes the rest of the way. “We want to win a state championship but that starts with winning league,” Downey said. “I would like to win player of the year – but I just want to win the state championship. That’s all I want to be honest.”
Downey currently ranks as the #30 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2019 rankings.
