The strong 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward went toe-to-toe the best he could against the Knights frontline and came away showing that he held his own. Wart may only be a sophomore but there’s no doubt he’s going to be a player to watch this seaosn and beyond.
Against Columbia Christian on Friday night, Wart tallied 20 points and 15 rebounds despite the loss. “We knew they were going to be pretty good and so gave it our all for a good chunk of the game,” Wart said. “But they’re a really good team.”
Going up against taller players such as 6-foot-10 Mo Hartwich and 6-foot-8, Ben Gregg, Wart gave it his all. Wart wasn’t intimidated in the least and scored some tough buckets inside over those guys on post moves and on drives facing the basket. A righty, he showed a great ability to take it strong to his left, and also a nice touch from the outside on a couple of perimeter jumpers.
“I think (my game’s) coming along pretty good,” Wart said. “I’ve got to give it a lot to my guards who give me the ball and give me the chance to use my ability to score underneath the basket. And when I’m getting doubled, they’re open for an easy pop-out three. It makes my life a lot easier when they’re open and are also working on giving me the ball.”
Wart notes that he’s continuing to work on his jump shot as well as his ball-handling. He didn’t play much summer ball as a sprained ankle limited him and then he was wrapped up with football season for Amity. While it’s early, he’s thought about the possibility of playing hoops at the college level.
“My goal is to at least make it to D-III,” Wart said. “If that could be a possibility, I’ll look into it further down the road. But for right now, I just want to try to make my team the best we can be. I think we’re going to do pretty good as long as we keep our head, play as a team which is what we’re known for. If we share the ball and play loose, I think we’ll be good.”
