Elijah Munyan started opening some eyes as a freshman last year but this season he’s ready to to make his mark. The explosive 6-foot-2, 170-pound guard certainly impressed those in attendance with his play in the final game of the Westside Winter Jam on Saturday night and he’s hoping for even bigger things when the state tournament rolls around in March.
In the Knights’ 82-58 victory over Amity, Munay was quite impressive. He finished with 13 points, with many of them of the spectacular variety. He showcased his athleticism by converting a couple of alley-oop dunks behind the zone, and nearly missed on another highlight jam on a transition attempt. While it’s clear that Munyan can attack the basket, that’s not all of his game – he also showed good form on his perimeter shot, knocking down 1-for-3 from three-point range.
The consistency from outside is what Munyan worked on this past off-season, as he didn’t play AAU basketball but instead worked out individually. “I was mainly getting better on my shot, because I usually take it to the basket and use my athleticism,” Munyan said.
Since he’s just getting on the radar, Munyan hasn’t really received much college recruiting interest and while he’s thought about it a little, he remains completely open with things. But people are starting to notice. With the cavalcade of college coaches dropping by the Columbia Christian gym this fall to get a look at teammate Ben Gregg, more than one has come away impressed with what they’ve seen of Munyan as well.
But Munyan has plenty of time to impress. In a couple of weeks, the Knights will play in the prestigious Les Schwab Invitational for the very first time and the sophomore is excited about the opportunity. “It’s going to be tough, but it’s going to be fun,” Munyan said. “It will be a good experience.”
And no matter how Columbia Christian fares in that tournament, their focus will be on the season – where Munyan has high expectations. “I think we’re going to get another state championship,” Munyan said. “I think we’re capable of it again. I just want to play hard and play the best of me.”
Munyan currently ranks as the #16 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
