Continue ReadingTo many, Aloha’s 5-2 record so far may be a bit of a surprising start but this isn’t news to Cobi Wilson. The versatile 6-foot-3 senior had an idea that this would happen. Wilson has been focused in on this year, and as he develops his game to progress to the college level, he’s also keeping his mind set on making folks aware that Warriors basketball is for real.
“A lot of people are sleeping on us,” Wilson said. “We know what we are capable of, it’s just a matter of showing others. We’re on a different mindset this year, seniors especially, just trying to get our last year in and have the most successful season we can.”
Wilson is a unique player. If the boxscore only shows points scored, his name isn’t going to jump off the page most nights. Instead, Wilson will rack up stats in practically every other category. He’s essentially a big point guard who can really pass the ball and on the defensive end, he’s a lockdown defender who can guard multiple positions.
“I’m just working on making passes, hustling – that’s my main role,” said Wilson. “I definitely need to develop into more of a scorer though, so that’s going to be a big part of my role the rest of the season.”
Wilson played with one of Rose City Basketball’s AAU teams this summer and while it was a good experience, it hasn’t translated into a lot of college recruiting attention yet. There has been some exploratory calls from some JCs and that level is fine with Wilson who is just looking for a chance.
“It’s real quiet right now but hopefully later this season I can change that,” Wilson said. “I’m planning on going to some spring showcases and work out with some different coaches who have connections with different colleges.”
The Warriors finish out their non-league schedule with the Century/Hillsboro Tournament a highlight next week. Then it’s on to Metro League play where Wilson is hopeful for a good showing. “Metro is a tough league but we’re going to go out there and do us,” Wilson said. “We just have to keep working hard and prove everyone wrong.”
Wilson currently ranks as the #64 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
