Prospect Spotlight: Andrew Porter (2019)
For Tavares, Andrew Porter’s absence hurt the Bulldogs’ chances a season ago.
The 2019 guard is back healthy and that bodes well for the team’s success.
He discovered before his junior year that he had a knee condition called osteochondritis dissecans.
“Surgery was the only option. I focused all of my time studying the game from a new perspective and worked even harder in school,” Porter told Prep Hoops. “As a result of my knee surgery, I gained a stronger mental game because in that situation you can either fold under pressure or make for a great comeback.”
Porter took AP and honors classes culminating a weighted GPA of 5.0.
In Class 6A-District 13, the 6’2″, 177-pound guard says he is looking to lead his team to a district title and show what he is capable of.
“I have been under the radar for too long and it is time to shine,” he said.
Porter spent his summer with HOOPS Life rehabbing his knee and refining his skills and strength.
“I have worked with HOOPS Life since I was in the 9th grade,” he said. “I am incredibly thankful for the programs they provided they took my game to another level.”
In terms of his biggest strengths, Porter pointed to these.
“I’m not afraid to get hurt, I attack and finish on big men, I am extremely athletic, I will lock up on defense. Also, I lead the team on and off the court, am a shot maker and not a shot taker.”
Porter says he wants to improve his handles and his overall defense.
Earning the nickname “YoungOx” for his work ethic, Porter gives Tavares a huge boost now that he’s back healthy. No offers or interest have come yet for the senior guard, but his leadership and effort level should be on display all season long for the Bulldogs.
