5 Takeaways: Community School at Naples
On Tuesday night, I continued my coverage of Fort Myers high school basketball at Naples High.
The Golden Eagles played host to Community School. The visiting Seahawks used a strong second quarter, outscoring Naples 21-11. Community School pulled away to win 67-52.
For Community School, senior guard Parker Weiss led all scorers with 24 points as four Seahawks ended in double digits.
Note: Lee and Collier County schools passed a rule back in August that banned backpacks and other large bags inside district sporting venues. I think all schools across the country should implement the same rule. It is a smart precaution.
Here are five takeaways from the matchup.
Parker Weiss and Jacob Siegel are gritty
-2019 guards Parker Weiss and Jacob Siegel combined for 37 of their team’s 67 points. Weiss dropped 24 points which included five 3’s. Siegel showed up with 14 points, on the glass and as a reliable hard-nosed defender. He dislocated his finger in the second half but played through the pain. Weiss and Siegel work well with one another (video below). Weiss is a jump shooter by nature while Siegel can mix it up as a shooter and a slasher. If healthy, the two seniors will take the Seahawks far in Class 5A-District 10.

Nate Raymond and Jon Alzamora are speedy guards
-No Naples player reached double digits in this game, but 2019 guard Jon Alzamora and 2020 guard Nate Raymond made legitimate contributions. Alzamora scored a team-high eight points, earning good feeds on cuts and driving to the hoop. Raymond proved to be a nice touch shooter and someone who can put pressure on defenses with seven points.

Ryker Vance has a lot of potential
-At the beginning of the game, Ryker Vance was being unselfish and as the night moved on, he was driving to the rack and using his size to his advantage. The 2021 6’4″ forward scored 13 points, cutting and being active in the second half. He had a pair of blocks on a sequence in the third quarter. When aggressive, Vance is hard to slow down with his length and athleticism. Next to Weiss and Siegel, Vance is a legitimate prospect.
Mitchell Kelly and Hunter Hancock are tough minded forwards
-2019 forward Hunter Hancock recorded seven points while 2020 forward Mitchell Kelly added four points. The Naples bigs were active on the glass and in the opening half, Kelly was flashing his ability to attack and be a stretch player. Hancock has a nice mid-range touch and a real feel for the floor. Combining for 11 points isn’t anything special, but the upperclassmen duo will carry the load for the Golden Eagles often.
Chris Kastroll is an x-factor for Community School
-2020 forward Chris Kastroll fell hard in the first half but continued despite clear pain in his lower body. The junior netted eight of his 12 points in the second half with six points in the third quarter. Kastroll was one of four players in double digits for the Seahawks. Alongside Weiss and Siegel, Kastroll has bought into the process that head coach Greg Donahue has in place there for his group. He’s an underrated talent who works super hard.
