After all, the versatile 6-foot-8, 190-pound forward from Columbia Christian High School is the son of a coach, and his father Matt Gregg is currently leading the women’s hoops program at Warner Pacific. Normally, Ben watches his dad at home games but on Monday night, he tagged along with pops for a road game – and he picked up his first Pac-12 scholarship offer in the process.
Before the Lady Knights took the floor, Washington State offered the younger Gregg a full ride. “My dad is actually playing the girls team tonight here in Pullman, so the (Wazzu) coaching staff wanted me and my dad to come for a visit,” Gregg said. “We got a tour and then Coach offered me. It feels really good – it’s a goal of mine to play in the Pac-12. I’m really happy about it.”
Gregg has a fairly good knowledge of the school having spent his younger years in Spokane. But getting to take an unofficial visit gave him some more insight. “My family lives up here and that’s a plus and I like their campus a lot,” Gregg said. “The facilities are great and it’s a big football school and they have all the sports – it’s a true college town.”
As excited as Gregg is to receive his first Pac-12 offer, he continues to keep all of his options open. The reason why? The interest continues to come in. Coach after coach has come by Columbia Christian this fall to watch him in open gym workouts and have come away impressed. Some of the many schools that have dropped by include Arizona, Oregon State, Portland, Portland State, Eastern Washington, Pepperdine, Texas Tech, and Gonzaga. Eastern Washington, Portland, and Portland State have already offered scholarships.
The word about Gregg has expanded past the West Coast as Texas assistant coach Darrin Horn recently stopped by and had a special request for the sophomore. “I’m supposed to call them every week,” Gregg said. “It’s a cool experience talking to all of these coaches and hearing from all these guys. Hopefully this keeps going as my high school career goes on.”
It’s obvious that the attention has come as a result of Gregg’s play this summer. And this fall, he’s participated in two big local events – and has done nothing but cement his reputation as a skilled forward with a ton of upside. “The Prime Time 40 went really well and West Coast Elite, I ended up hurting my nose so I only got to play one game so I didn’t get to play against Nathan Bittle which was the goal – but it was all good,” Gregg said. “I got to play against Nathan there at the PT40 that was the first time I got to see him. I thought I did pretty good and held my own.”
With no rush to make any college decision, Gregg is getting set for the start of basketball season. “Things are coming along pretty well – I’ve been in the gym working on everything as I just want to keep getting better,” Gregg said. “We should hopefully compete for a state championship again – hopefully win it and go back-to-back, that’s our goal.”
“We’re also in the Les Schwab Tournament this year – we’re going to play against some bigger schools so that will be a challenge,” he continued. “It’s a little nerve racking because we’re the only 2A school in it, but we’ll see how we’ll hold up against the bigger schools. It will be fun.”
Gregg currently ranks as the #2 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
