Prospect Spotlight: 2018 Triston Evans
2018 Triston Evans has came out the gates playing well and providing his team with a new go to guy. He has the talent to play inside and out and as of late he has stepped up in clutch moments of games. He’s definitely a player to watch and opposing coaches will have to game plan for him.
Moving to Plant City, Florida, from Horn Lake, Mississippi over the summer provided some challenges for the senior academically because the state’s academic credits were different but he was able to overcome them and join the team the second half of the season. He’s stepped in and helped the team continue its winning ways. I made my way over to Plant City and had a Q & A session with the senior.
Question 1: When you found out the academic credits were different and you were not able to play sports right away, what effect did it have on you moving to Plant City? Evans stated, ” It was worth it, I felt like I was in a better situation and I knew if I worked hard, I’d join the team sooner or later.”
At 6’4 the high flying playmaker is making his presence known by getting to the basket at ease and knocking down open shots in timely possessions. Evans has a smooth game and the way he blows past defenders looks effortless. Since arriving at Plant City, Triston has been looked upon to become a star in the city due to the accomplishments of his father, Plant City great Russell Evans. Russell Evans set or broke nearly every record during his playing days.
Question 2: Playing in front of your father with all the accomplishments he had, has it added pressure for you to play in front of him and the hometown crowd? “Yes, my dad is constantly on me. He and his friends expect so much out of me. I work hard and I put pressure on myself so i welcome the challenge but at times it can be a bit much.”
Question 3: When you joined the team, did what role did you expect to have and where do you see your team going from here? “At first I thought I would just work my way into the rotation but I was thrown into the starting line up right away. My team needs me to be a complete player and thats what I’m working on everyday. I feel we can go all the way to state as long as we keep working hard. I feel the teams we lost to, we shouldn’t have and given a chance we could avenge those losses.”
Triston Evans is versatile player and has been used on the wing and in the post. As the districts roll around and the playoffs separate teams, I expect him to pick up a few offers. He’s averaging 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds a game.
