2019 Brandon Gainey talks life, basketball, and recruitment.
2019 Brandon Gainey of Port Charlotte is having himself quite a season. He’s averaging 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 assist. I sat with Gainey to find out more about him, his goals and his recruitment.
At the age of twelve, Brandon and his family moved to Florida from Louisiana. Shortly after arriving in Port Charlotte, he developed a fondness for the game of basketball. “When I first got here, I was really bored a lot and there was a playground near where I lived. I would go up to the park and try to play with the other kids but I wasn’t as good as they were. Being the competitor that I am, I worked and worked on my game until I began to win some games.” said Gainey
I’ve been watching the 6’6 Gainey work and get better over the season and what I see is a player who can stroke it well from deep, knows how to move without the ball, and a player who takes defense seriously. Gainey said, “I came into the year off a good travel season so I wanted to build on that. I worked on my ball-handling the most and some other drills to make me a complete threat on both ends. I wanted to draw attention to myself with my play so that I could be recruited and have options to choose from when its my time to choose where I want to play.”
Brandon is an explosive guy, he runs the floor well and looks to finish above the rim and has caught a few bodies this year. His play will definitely be key if the Pirates want to repeat as district champs. Last year’s exit in the regional final left a bad taste in the team’s mouth and they believe they can get back there and finish the job. Brandon stated, “I know we can be a final four team, we just have to keep working and winning games.
Brandon Gainey has interest from Mercer, Montclair State, and Valdosta State.
