Five Takeaways: West Oaks vs. Victory Rock
On Tuesday night, Victory Rock played host to West Oaks in an SIAA game.
Victory Rock outlasted West Oaks 77-70 in a game that heated up in the second half. Ahead 55-33 early in the second half, West Oaks went on a 14-0 run to cut it an eight-point deficit. However, it wasn’t enough.
The top scorers for Victory Rock were Madut Akec (20 points), Jonathan Dos Anjos (14 points) and Michael Durr (13 points). For West Oaks, Tyrieke Blakeney had 23 points while Tyrell Jones scored 15 points and Rifen Miguel added 12 points.
Here are five takeaways from the night.
Madut Akec is a really good shooter
6’7″ senior forward Madut Akec worked his way to 20 points. 16 of his points came in the second half alone as he got to the free throw line often and hit from outside. Akec is a low/mid-major Division I prospect who is good with the ball in his hands in tempo.
Tyrieke Blakeney never stops attacking
Leading all scorers with 23 points as he drove to the basket early and often. He was the best offensive weapon for the Flame on the night. The guard is a crafty finisher, who has impressive skills for a smaller framed senior.
Jonathan Dos Anjos and Michael Durr know their roles
It was Michael Durr in the first half and in the second half it was Jonathan Dos Anjos. Durr, a senior USF commit worked hard in the paint and Dos Anjos, a senior stretched the floor over the final 20 minutes. Dos Anjos finished with 14 points and Durr had 13 including a couple of big slams.
Tyrell Jones bounced back in the second half
Junior guard Tyrell Jones had no points at the half, but he wound up working his way to a 15-point evening. Jones is a point man who has so much energy. He hit 3-of-6 from outside and did what he could to put some runs together late. Jones is the top pure athlete on this team.
Insight on both teams
Victory Rock – Between Akec, Durr, Dos Anjos, juniors Kuany Kuany and Kolton Mitchell, Victory Rock has a lot of options to work with on both sides of the ball. Akec is a gifted shooter and floor stretcher. Durr is a slippery big man. Dos Anjos is a confident shooter. Kuany is a fun and long 2019 forward and Mitchell is a vocal leader at the point.
West Oaks – Jones, Blakeney, freshman AJ Neal and the Miguel brothers, senior Rifen and freshman Selton are the top pieces for this group. PJ Person was not in uniform on the night. Jones and Blakeney feed off of one another and can do similar things. Neal is a talented outside shooter who had eight points. Rifen Miguel had 12 points and Selton Miguel paced him with nine points, the two brothers dished out passes to one another.
