Five Takeaways: Lake Wales at Winter Haven
On a night where the two top big men were inactive, Winter Haven handled visiting Lake Wales 65-49.
Senior forward Keyshawn Bryant sat out for Winter Haven while sophomore center Gervon Dexter was not in uniform for Lake Wales.
The Blue Devils were led by senior forward Dorian James and his game-high 21 points. Junior forward Raykwon Frazier posted a team-best eight points for Lake Wales.
Here are five takeaways from the Thursday night tilt.
Dorian James is a legitimate Division I player
The senior UNF commit had 13 points at halftime. He added eight more in the second half as Winter Haven went to the full court press to frazzle Lake Wales. Winter Haven fed James inside throughout and he made the most of his one-on-one matchups. He’s a gifted rebounder and his length helps him win battles offensively.
Donte’ Armstead is crafty
Frazier was the leading scorer for the Highlanders, but senior guard Donte’ Armstead was the busiest player on both ends. The 5’8″ guard scored six of his seven points in the third quarter. Frazier is quick and moves the ball well. His head fake is a thing of beauty and it tricked Winter Haven often in the second half.
Terrance Anglin can score in bunches
Anglin had 15 points pacing James for Winter Haven. The senior point guard was awesome on the break, getting out in front time and time again. Most of his points came in transition as the Blue Devils looked to make a play on the outlet pass consistently. Anglin is a key piece to the Winter Haven offense.
Walter Clayton has loads of potential
It wasn’t a night to remember in terms of his offensive output, but freshman guard Walter Clayton showed why he can be a really good player soon. He dished out really nice assists and blocked a few shots on the other end. Clayton is a high energy player who will only get better in time. You can see the potential, it will just take a little time.
Quick thoughts on both teams
Lake Wales – The Highlanders are full of first and second-year players. It is early in the season and I think that it will get better for them, but a rotation must be figured out. Dexter is the top interior piece and Lake Wales needs him back down low.
Winter Haven – Bryant will be back soon and that will help for the already impressive transitional offense. James is the most consistent player while Terrance Anglin and senior guard Bryson Birdsong pace this offense. The Blue Devils are a sound team.
