Chase Johnston, Westminster Academy
Westminster Head coach Ehren Wallhoff was not looking to throw Chase Johnston into a tailspin or smother his guard in hype or hyperbole when he called Johnston “the best shooter in the state.”
For the most part, Johnston has enabled Wallhoff’s words to prove prophetic. Johnston, who holds offers from FCGU and Stetson as well as Ivy League programs, has lived up to it. In addition to possessing a stroke that’s smooth, he’s got a quick release and is able to knock down transition 3-pointers or shots with amplified close out pressure. His ability to hit timely shots cements Johnston’s status as a certifiable knockdown specialist, albeit you can’t pigeonhole him as simply a shooter.
Jesus Duquesne, Mater High School
At 6-foot-7 and with considerable 3-point range, Duquesne is one of the hardest to guard from beyond 3-point territory. He’s got a good looking form and can free himself up and garner a bird’s eye view of the rim. He shined during last year’s A-Rod Tournament with a trio of treys against The Rock School and has hit big shots at opportune times. To solidify himself as one the city’s best marksmen, he must develop a true killer instinct.
Malcolm Farrington, BPA
While most of Farrington’s scoring onslaughts last year entailed 3-pointers in succession and big shots during significant runs, the West Palm Beach native has diversified his trigger man portfolio this season. He’s shown a knack for getting open and creating enough space to find his shot.
More importantly, however, he’s expanded as a guy who can stick shots off the dribble, in pull-up fashion, and hit you with a flurry of stepbacks. His offensive engine as grown, especially with a tight handle and quicker release. In hitting turnaround jumpers and showing poise with late game 3-pointers, Farrington has registered his presence as a Division-I prospect.
