Top 250 Expo Prospect Report: Celio Despacho
This Deering High (Maine) senior had one of the most compelling stories out of all the players. Making the type of trip he made, one could only hope that he’d get everything there is to offer out of an Expo—and, he did. Driving 24 hours from Maine, Despacho was a fun story to watch.
Q: What was your experience like in Daytona at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo?
My experience in Daytona Beach at the Prep Hoops showcase was surreal. I was very excited to able to participate in it because my family and I drove for 24 hours for me to have a D1 experience worth the trip.
Q: Where did you first hear about it?
My father happened to be following the Prep Hoops FL Twitter page, and one day he received a notification/invitation to the camp. We signed up and planned for the trip ahead of us.
Q: What was the best thing you learned?
The best thing I learned, and became part of my game, was the ability to change speed to break a defender and go to the basket for a shot or a layup. I also learned that playing as a team is better than playing. Playing alone induces the player to make more mistakes.
Q: What positives in your game grew? What negative in your game did you notice and try to fix?
A part of my game that developed in many ways was the ability to make a move and create space while at it. The negative parts of my game that I noticed was noticing the open gaps and attacking when the man is sleeping on defense.
Q: Would you recommend the expo to your peers? How come?
In my opinion, I would absolutely recommend this showcase to multiple people because it’s a great learning experience. Also, it is a great way to develop your game by competing with a purpose.
Q: What is your role looking like this season?
My role this season is to be a leader on/off the court, and also be able to be a court distributor at all times. I want to help out my teammates and become successful. Hopefully, I’ll win a state championship in the state of Maine.
Celio comes off has a person who wants to absorb as much as he can from the teachers around him. Never did he look annoyed or agitated with any drills being done. He just looked attentive.
