Top 250 Expo Prospect Report: De’Onta Jones (2020)
This sophomore from Florida High took words from coaches to heart during his time at the Expo. He really aimed to grasp everything that was said which could mold him into a greater player. We spoke about some of the highs and lows from his showing at the Top 250.
Q: What was your experience like in Daytona at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo?
I felt like it was a great experience. The competition and the different stations they had there working on individual game clearly made you better. Also, the coaching staff was always able to make good criticism to get you get over the hump from being a good basketball player, to a great basketball player.
Q: Where did you first hear about it?
I first heard about Prep Hoops from my AAU coach when she asked me and my teammates If we wanted to go.
Q: What was the best thing you learned?
I think the best thing I learned at the camp was during the fast-break drills. Coach said it was important when coming down the court you should be able to change gears because it makes it hard for a defender to guard you.
Q: What positives in your game grew? What negative in your game did you notice and try to fix?
A couple areas that I seen grow during the camp were my vision, attacking the rim, and my defense. One negative thing I seen was mostly when I was attacking the rim, I always drove on my left side because that’s my strong side. During the next couple of games, I tried going right more.
Q: Would you recommend the expo to your peers? How come?
Yes, I would recommend this to my peers because they have drills to help you get better in every way. Also, if you want to say you’re the best, you have to compete with the best.
Q: What is your role looking like this season?
This season, my role is to be able to create open shots for my teammates. When my shot is open, I should be able to knock it down.
Jones definitely has one of the most competitive attitudes that I’ve come across. If channeled the right way, it can shape him into be a player to look out for in 2020. Check out the Top 250 underclassmen highlight-film created by R.A.W.E. Recruits.
