Summerfield Fall League Saturday Standouts
The final day of the Summerfield Fall League took place at Tampa Catholic on Saturday. Plenty of talented players took the floor. But as expected, the overall flow of games was a bit unorganized as teams are still working through the kinks in October.
Here is a look at the top standouts from the action on Saturday.
Winston Dessesow (Admiral Farragut)
Dessesow is a starting senior guard who stepped up in the district playoffs last season with Dre Fuller out. On Saturday, the 6’0″ guard shined alongside Fuller and company. He rarely missed, made good decisions and showed his elusiveness. Expect a steady year for Dessesow.
CJ Williams (Countryside)
A 6’2″ intelligent point guard, Williams is as dependable as they come. He hit open 3’s, dished out passes often and led the charge all afternoon for Countryside. It is hard not to like Williams. The senior even had a dunk showing off his pure athleticism. Countryside’s offense starts and ends with Williams.
Dre Fuller (Admiral Farragut)
The UCF commit showed resilience. Fuller hurt his ankle on a failed dunk attempt in the semifinal win over Tampa Catholic. The 6’6″ senior forward returned to full health just an hour later for the final against Countryside. He had some really strong takes to the basket, made outside jumpers and displayed gritty strength.
Tino Petrovic (Countryside)
The next two guys on this list were the best shooters on the day. Petrovic, a 6’4″ forward connected on five straight 3’s in the first half against Admiral Farragut. The senior wasn’t as fortunate in the final half, but overall he displayed a sweet stroke. Petrovic has great form on his jumper, something that he’s developed for years.
Darin Green Jr. (Legends)
Along with Petrovic, 2019 Wharton forward Darin Green Jr. couldn’t miss from deep. The 6’4″ shooter hit often against Anclote. Rider and FGCU offered him earlier this month while Cal State Fullerton extended him an offer in July. Green Jr. is becoming a factor as an attacker and that would be dangerous.
Tim Carter (Tampa Catholic)
The 6’1″ senior guard fared well on the day for Tampa Catholic. Carter typically makes the most of each possession. He has a really good shot and mid-range floater. Carter will be the top point guard for the Crusaders alongside Messiah Turner.
Sager Cavalier (Tampa Tarpons)
Alonso’s best inside presence was 2019 forward Sager Cavalier. He paced the floor nicely for the Tarpons, his AAU team on Saturday. He performed at a high level against Tampa Catholic in the 12 p.m. game. Look for him to be a key factor for Alonso this fall.
LJ Thomas (Brooks DeBartolo)
At 6’1″, Thomas has the looks of a very high-end 2020 point guard. He excelled this summer with Nike Team Florida and it was more of the same on Saturday with Brooks DeBartolo. He connected on some jumpers, but most impressively got his teammates consistently involved.
Jakob Hester (Anclote)
Hester finds his way into the paint often. The 6’5″ 2020 forward is the best interior piece for Anclote. He put up points at a high clip against the Legends whether that was on layups or free throws made after drawing contact.
Carr Thiam (Legends)
At 6’3″, Thiam is packed with muscle and smarts. The 2020 Wharton forward piggybacked off of Green’s success. Thiam is going to be a main performer for the Wildcats this season. He looks more polished and active than ever.
Matthew Berry (Countryside)
Coming over Oldsmar Christian, the 6’6″ senior forward is a nice fit for Countryside. Berry found his way inside for rebounds, lay-ins and dunks. He even showed off his mid-range jumper.
Brandyn Hale (Brooks DeBartolo)
Hale is a refined shooter. He got going from outside and at 5’10”, he’s able to use his speed to get around for open looks. Brooks DeBartolo is lucky to have Hale. He’s an intelligent player.
Kobe Knox (Tampa Catholic)
The younger Knox brother, Kobe played the best that I’ve seen him perform yet. He has always been a good outside shooter, but he hustled in transition and displayed patience as a passer. At 6’1″, Knox is still growing and the 2020 guard is going to mature this season for Tampa Catholic. That is apparent.
