Florida Top 250 Expo: Names to know from 2020/2021
Down in Florida, we held our second ever Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo. This time around we ran the event at DME Academy, a top notch facility with two NBA sized courts and brand new training areas. Exactly 86 players were in attendance from classes ranging from 2018-2021.
It was a fun day filled with plenty of good basketball and training. Here are six names from the Class of 2020 and 2021 that you need to know.
2021 Seacrest G Wilson Welkenbach
The smallest player at the expo at 5’3″, 2021 Seacrest guard Wilson Welkenbach came to play. He got to the rack often with his good ball skills and his handles were impressive. Welkenbach doesn’t intimidate defensives initially, but his opponents figured out quickly that he needed to be guarded.
2020 Miami Central G Malik Cooper
A kid that had fun out there was 2020 Miami Central guard Malik Cooper. The 5’11” sophomore is a sound point guard who can find his way into defensive lanes. He’s constantly smiling and enjoying basketball. When he clamps down, he’s hard to stop.
2021 Chaminade Madonna F Roger Smith
Listed at 6’3″, 2021 Chaminade Maddona forward Roger Smith showed a high-end inside presence. He is likely taller than his listed height and he’s going to prove that as a freshman for the Lions. Smith was routinely working his way into the post for buckets.
2020 East River G Brian Miller
One of the top pure point guards in the entire underclassmen group was 2020 East River guard Brian Miller. The 5’8″ prospect led the charge in transition and found open players routinely one step ahead of the defense. If he can gain more speed, Miller will be tough to slow down.
2020 Marathon G Steven Hernandez
A pure sharpshooter, 2020 Marathon guard Steven Hernandez was letting 3’s rain on Saturday. The 5’11” prospect has some serious range and he made defenses pay because of it. Look for Hernandez to be a 3-point specialist for the Dolphins this fall.
2020 North Florida Christian F Jalan Black
At 6’3″, Jalan Black is a big combo guard. The 2020 North Florida Christian guard/wing is smooth down the floor and works hard to get into open areas in the paint. Black is going to be a factor for the Eagles this season.
