Prospect Spotlight: Tyler Sumner (2018)
Tyler Sumner is a 5’9 athletic Point Guard that looks to drive first but is still a threat from outside. Although he faces height mismatches he still finds a way to get to the rim and use his body to finish strong. This year he will be the # 1 guy for the Sunset Apollos.
Sumner had a rough junior season. He had to battle 2 concussions he obtained throughout the season which only allowed him to play in around half the season. This year he looks to be a threat in the metro league.
“I want to lead my team to the Chiles Center. We have the team to do it, and everyone has a winning mentality on the team so let’s make it happen.” Sumner is eager to get the season started. He said that his goal for the year is to finish First team All-Metro, and he could make that happen. In the offseason he is in the gym everyday working on something new to get better. “I put up hundreds of shots a day. There’s always something to get better at.” Sumner told me.
He doesn’t play AAU basketball because he is also a baseball prospect which takes up his whole spring and summer. But that doesn’t mean that he isn’t interested in playing basketball in college. He has the talent to play at the D2-D3 level. Coaches need to start checking him out as they could get a solid, well-rounded player.
