Prospect Spotlight: Kevin Barreiro (2018)
Gateway senior Kevin Barreiro is a pest on offense once he dribbles his way through the paint.
Barreiro is another sneaky guard who can push the fastbreak with the ball in his hands, calmly. In traffic, he can stop on a dime and hit a nice floater through the lane. On the smaller end, but no-less strong, Barreiro can finish after absorbing contact at the basket. Durable, dependable, Barreiro can deliver.
He admits that during his junior year, he didn’t have the weight or the strength he possesses, now. The summer has been dedicated to just that. Barreiro said he’s been hitting the weight room consistently during the high school off-season. He’s been doing a lot of body-contact drills to get his tolerance up.
The biggest area he’s aiming to grow? Leadership.
“I’ve got to pick up any heads that are down and try to motivate my team inside and off-the-court,” Barreiro said. “If I see the players quiet and I go to the bench, I will hype them up.”
He showed strides in that area with his Florida Press AAU squad at the Raptors Elite ID4 Invitational. When asked about how close knit his group is, Barreiro responded simply, “It’s a brotherhood.” When their not at a tournament, players are still together—as a team.
Barreiro said his college hoop dreams can come true if he obviously keeps working hard, but also grow his smarts about the game, his IQ. His skill is there, Barreiro is just fighting for the opportunity.
