Recruiting Report: Camden Vander Zwaag (2018)
With still one weekend left to showcase himself at a big-time grassroots event, Camden Vander Zwaag could very well see his list of offers grow.
Right now, the 6-foot-3 Johnston sniper has offers from Air Force, and most recently Truman State.
He went into detail about the Truman State offer during a recent phone interview, and mentioned some other schools that may be on the verge of offering.
“Truman State is really intriguing, my brother went there too, so I’m friends with the coaches,” said Vander Zwaag. “They didn’t go through the general recruiting process, they just said they wanted me, and I thought that was pretty cool.
He added: “Other schools that have been looking at me right now, one is Sioux Falls, and another one is Northwest Missouri State.”
With one D1 offer and one D2 offer right now, Vander Zwaag already has choices in terms of the level he plays at. But he says it’s more about the fit than the level.
“I’m just a guy that wants the best fit; if it’s Division I, that’s OK, if it’s Division II that’s OK,” he said. “I just want to feel good with my team, and with the coaches, the campus and the city.”
Already known for his ability to get hot and stay hot from deep, Vander Zwaag — Iowa’s 15th-ranked 2018 — says he’s working to be known as more than just a sharpshooter.
“What I’ve been working on the most is pretty much my pull-ups and mid-range and driving to the hoop,” he said. “I don’t want to be a one-dimensional player, I don’t want to be just a shooter. I want to be able to score off the bounce and at the rim.”
After playing in the Hardwood Classic last weekend in Lawrence, KS, Vander Zwaag and his Kingdom Hoops Elite squad will head back down south to Kansas City this weekend for the Summer Slam.
“I’m really looking forward to getting our team together and working on our game against really good athletes. We don’t have these crazy freak athletes, but we get to play and try our hardest against guys that will be Division I athletes,” said Vander Zwaag.
“And what I’m looking forward to most, is being able to test my skills against some of these crazy athletes.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to getting a little more exposure, and getting able to pay in front of these coaches, and just to play the game I love.”
