Prospect Spotlight: Nigel Brown (2019)
West Orange rising junior Nigel Brown is putting in veteran-style work, right now.
From Vertimax training, to working with a professional shooting coach, to getting active with two other trainers every other day, Brown believes he’s been making the type of moves that can take his game to new heights.
When I caught him at the Raptors Elite ID4 Invitational, he was seen being a relentless driver to the bucket, unafraid of bumping through the paint along the way. He has a smooth, reliable finish around the rim, but also can hit the running floater from 10-12 feet out.
With development, Brown can have a game-style worthy of reaching a state Final Four berth. It’s what’s on his mind the most. But, that thought has to be shared amongst the entire team. Something that wasn’t present, last season.
Brown said matters of self kept his squad reaching their full potential. The entirety of the roster didn’t see eye-to-eye. With a renewed direction, Brown hopes he can develop into a voice that’s respected in the locker room.
“I need more leadership skills on and off the court,” Brown admitted. “I want to be better in the classroom, too.”
Brown is understanding that it takes both athletic skills AND academic skills to reach the college scholarship zenith he’s craving. Going in to the second half of high school, there’s no better time to make the switch, than right now.
