Samuel Griffin talks move to Westminster, summer with CP25 and more
2019 guard Samuel Griffin is transferring to Westminster Academy.
The 6’2″, 160-pounder averaged 8.8 points per game for his previous squad Norland a year ago. The Vikings went 22-7 and appeared in the Class 7A region final before losing to eventual state champion Dillard.
Griffin says the move to Westminster was due to his Christian faith and it gives him the chance to be challenged academically and athletically. The Lions won the Class 4A state title last season and return key pieces in 2018 guard Zach Scott, 2019 guard Chase Johnston and 2020 forward Dudley Blackwell.
In terms of a role, Griffin plans to come in and add to the team’s success as a point guard.
Over eight of last 11 games last season for Norland, Griffin scored 10 or more points which included a 21 point performance where he shot 10-of-11 from the field in a win over North Miami Beach.
“During this past season at Norland, I learned how important defense is in order to win games,” Griffin told Prep Hoops Florida. “The part of my game that grew the most while at Norland was finding ways to score throughout short periods of time.”
He’s running with CP25 for the first time this summer. He’s focused on helping his group win the Adidas Gauntlet Finale in South Carolina.
On top of that, he says he plans to train hard to increase his skill and physical attributes. He’s getting to work with Westminster Academy for the month of June during high school team camps.
Starting his basketball at age 6, Griffin pointed to his abilities to catch and shoot, create a shot off the dribble, be a physical defender, get others involved and his court vision as his biggest strength. He’s aiming to haul in more rebounds and follow his shot consistently.
No offers have come yet for Griffin, but he’s drawn interest from Kansas State, UNC Greensboro, FSU, Oklahoma State, FGCU and Northern Arizona.
Griffin is a poised player. He uses his length to push the ball all over the court. As he matures in high school summer league and his work with CP25, it will only help his game. Griffin is a 2019 point guard to keep a close eye on.
