Prospect Spotlight: Willie Williams (2020)
Being a leader is something that has no age limit to Gainesville rising sophomore Willie Williams.
Going back to when I saw him play at the Sunshine State Games last month, he delivered one of the finer shooting performances of the entire weekend. Williams notched six threes, four in the second half as a member of Gainesville Basketball Club. He knows how to penetrate the gaps and also create shooting opportunities for those around him. Just another factor going into his leadership.
Williams is a reserved point guard, but he doesn’t hesitate to be vocal, and be a captain to his team. When the team loses, he points to himself, first. Despite having juniors and seniors above him, Williams aims to be a motivator who will upperclassmen to do the same.
As far as skill-set, he never appeared like he didn’t know where he was dribbling to. His eyes were always up, searching for ways to run the offense.
Without the ball, very fluid, never likes to stand still. If you like to run a motion offense, Williams can orchestrate in a way you’d like.
He did call himself a streaky shooter, at times. The summer will be dedicated to defense and shooting-consistency. With 2020 not on the horizon anytime soon, look for a lot of growth between now and then.
